That face!! She’s adorable@GBB (gamma bearded babies) I am happy that you have a terrific and helpful neighbor. A little assist goes a long ways sometimes also a good reminder of the little things making a big impact ♡ she sounds like a chicken tender to me ♡
@kurby22 It is going to be so gratifying catching those rats. Where is PJ and her pellet gun when you need her?!
Keep us posted as this could be fun, I live vicariously through you!
@GallusPhallus We made special gates for our decks. They work 90% but leaning a scary broom where the chooks can see it has worked 100%View attachment 3242569
Did you visit Kauai @ChicksnMore ? Other isles have chooks but NONE have like KauaiWe don't have the mongoose who seem to keep the #s on other isles down. Yes they are small, large bantam esq, probably from poor diet generation after generation plus being descendants of junglefowl. But do fill out nicely with care. They are amazingly resourceful. There are not as many chickens up Koke'e (w/exception to the state park where they are fed).
I am sure the nests get raided by wild pigs and it is harder to raise a clutch with pigs, cold temperatures and rain, plus NOT a lot of bugs up here either. Down the mountain the pox seems to be the big killer of chicks.

Yes, I will keep you all posted on the rats! Definitely need to solve the issue! I do wonder if they lost a friend or two last night though. We were putting the chickens to bed and all the sudden heard leaves rustling and squeaking like tiny critters were being attacked and shortly after that we smelled a skunk! Soooo maybe nature took care of a couple for me? I can hope anyway! The camera that goes in that corner died and so I need to charge it and see how the numbers look!

Well I think I mentioned that I had a lone chick hatch and I was feeling super bad it was so lonely. I put feelers out on our local poultry Facebook page and asked if anyone had day olds available and last night my chicken sitter texted me. I had forgotten she asked if she could take some eggs and hatch them, and sure enough 8 bantam babies hatched the SAME day as lonely Brie baby! So she said she’d be willing to give me 2-3 or all of them if I wanted

Ariana Sushi (Aria named her) is a splash bantam Cochin, and I’m super excited for splash Cochins! Parmesan (son named her) is a Silkie-Olandsk Dwarf chick and the last one is also a Silkie-OD cross that hasn’t been named yet…Sia is their momma and Bruno is the dad!

TBD (I’m in love with her markings!)
And last for tonight, I decided I need to get a stiff spine and rehome one of my Polish boys. Since I know Spider is a boy and I think he will do fine free ranging and having his own flock—I opted to rehome him instead of Jo Jo (formerly Josephine) who is sort of spazzy, can’t see things, and seems a bit confused in general!

He’s just so handsome!! I guess it comes with the name!
