What did you do with your flock today?

@GBB (gamma bearded babies) I am happy that you have a terrific and helpful neighbor. A little assist goes a long ways sometimes also a good reminder of the little things making a big impact ♡ she sounds like a chicken tender to me ♡

@kurby22 It is going to be so gratifying catching those rats. Where is PJ and her pellet gun when you need her?!
Keep us posted as this could be fun, I live vicariously through you!

@GallusPhallus We made special gates for our decks. They work 90% but leaning a scary broom where the chooks can see it has worked 100% 😉View attachment 3242569

Did you visit Kauai @ChicksnMore ? Other isles have chooks but NONE have like Kauai 😜 We don't have the mongoose who seem to keep the #s on other isles down. Yes they are small, large bantam esq, probably from poor diet generation after generation plus being descendants of junglefowl. But do fill out nicely with care. They are amazingly resourceful. There are not as many chickens up Koke'e (w/exception to the state park where they are fed).
I am sure the nests get raided by wild pigs and it is harder to raise a clutch with pigs, cold temperatures and rain, plus NOT a lot of bugs up here either. Down the mountain the pox seems to be the big killer of chicks.
That face!! She’s adorable 🥰

Yes, I will keep you all posted on the rats! Definitely need to solve the issue! I do wonder if they lost a friend or two last night though. We were putting the chickens to bed and all the sudden heard leaves rustling and squeaking like tiny critters were being attacked and shortly after that we smelled a skunk! Soooo maybe nature took care of a couple for me? I can hope anyway! The camera that goes in that corner died and so I need to charge it and see how the numbers look! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 I have looked into adopting a barn/garden kitty though! We will see if my other attempts work or not 😆 I have lots of pretty wild birds I don’t like scaring away too.

Well I think I mentioned that I had a lone chick hatch and I was feeling super bad it was so lonely. I put feelers out on our local poultry Facebook page and asked if anyone had day olds available and last night my chicken sitter texted me. I had forgotten she asked if she could take some eggs and hatch them, and sure enough 8 bantam babies hatched the SAME day as lonely Brie baby! So she said she’d be willing to give me 2-3 or all of them if I wanted 🙃 So tonight I went over and traded her a Silkie chick for 3 teeny chicks from my bantams and they’re sooo cute 🥰

Ariana Sushi (Aria named her) is a splash bantam Cochin, and I’m super excited for splash Cochins! Parmesan (son named her) is a Silkie-Olandsk Dwarf chick and the last one is also a Silkie-OD cross that hasn’t been named yet…Sia is their momma and Bruno is the dad! 😍

And last for tonight, I decided I need to get a stiff spine and rehome one of my Polish boys. Since I know Spider is a boy and I think he will do fine free ranging and having his own flock—I opted to rehome him instead of Jo Jo (formerly Josephine) who is sort of spazzy, can’t see things, and seems a bit confused in general! 😄 I’m sad because I think Spider is just the most handsome rooster, but I was able to find someone with no roosters looking for a nice boy who will handle kids and a small flock so I know he will be happy 😢
He’s just so handsome!! I guess it comes with the name! ❤️ I’m gonna miss him 😢

Oh Spider is gorgeous! That had to be hard!

And that lil colorful baby!!! OMGeeze! I luv it!!! Ya gotta get a good name to go with those markings!!!

Omgoodness! I just love a happy ending and you were overdue for a turnaround! That is just terrific @kurby22 . I could not be more thrilled for you and those chicks are amazing ♡♡♡

Wow. Can't believe you gave up your Spider 😢 now who are you going to confuse me with 🕷😅 He is one handsome dude. I totally understand sometimes you just gotta take that deep breath and let go though- especially when a good home shows. It just seems better for everyone in the end. So bravo 😭:hugs

Hows everyone doing with the temperatures?

Good morning chicken people ♡
I had a long day and my head hurt from no food and the heat by the time I got back up and I am sure I will get some strange heat rash and my joints got cooked and will hurt for a month.... but got everyone taken care of and that was good and I just went to bed after my dinner and woke @ 3am with no headache, so even better.

@Happy hen lover gosh that must feel good getting that taken care of and I love your mention of cooler Temps! Home Depot had out a few fall items but my gaze got stuck on this tool box that I really, really need but did not have room for and was not prepared to impulse buy. Been thinking of sneaking down the hill and picking it up today but honestly should wait till after -THE big shop clean push phase 2 this fall. But man it is pretty.... what to do, what to do... 🤔

Sometimes it seems like these temperatures just won't break for us Westsiders. I was a sweatfest after unloading the kids waterheater and then emptying my truck. My chicks were at a total pant in the top outdoor brooder with no added heat. I tossed a hose out for the chickens so they could play under a tree but honestly they seemed pretty ok, though did enjoy getting their toes wet.

DH has been laying low and even got in a long and deserved nap yesterday. He says he feels OK, was just catching up on sleep. .. 🤞 I have enjoyed the extra duties and seeing my boy ( just not the heat)

so brought the chicks back up. They were relived and now Forest has his own TV.

Thank you! 😍 I’m excited to have some of my own sweet chickens and happy that two of them are Sia babies. She’s both a gorgeous Silkie and just the sweetest little bird ❤️ Wish one of them was Cher’s too 😢

I’m feeling very conflicted over Spider. Aria is really mad at me too :-( She asked me why I had to rehome an “innocent” rooster. In other words one that hasn’t pecked at her or us. 🥺 He’s big and beautiful and if I had room for a rooster flock I’d keep him…but I still have 12 roosters 😩 So some have to go. I was hoping I could keep Nohope the Orpington as my other LF rooster…but I’m not sure how he’s going to handle his hormones. He’s very skittish but willing to go after things he finds scary. So we will see I guess!

The temperatures start climbing today through next week…and it’s going to be miserable 😩 We bought bags of ice, will use the ACs, the misters and some very cold watermelon. I hope all of them make it 😢

Today should be our last 90 day...I hope.
And of course I just watered and in looking it says we "should" get rain next two days...oh well.
I got the idc blues.
Bluey is crowing constantly this morning which is causing Joey to crow constantly...ugh. I wandered why he was so hateful this morning so I'm guessing hormones ragin...it was so bad late yesterday that Lizzy slept away from all of em last night! I couldn't believe she did that!

That looks like a pretty awesome toolbox!! I’ve been working on finding a good one to hold all my chicken stuff like you have! It needs to be sturdy with lots of space and drawers deep enough to hold all the things!

I’m glad your DH is taking it easy and super envious you get to escape your miserable temps! I plan to retire where temps rarely ever get above 80! I just HATE the heat. I get reverse seasonal affective disorder…summer makes me depressed instead of cold dark winters 😆

Baby chick TV is the best idea!! I need that! 😍😍

Is Lizzy feeling OK? ♡♡♡ 😮 or just sick of boys...? Cuz I get the latter 😂

Aww...the chicks are all so cute! I love the names too❤️. I'm looking forward to seeing how they grow! I kinda want to get some bantam cochins. They just look so huggable with all that fluff!

I'm gonna miss Spider pics! He's such a handsome boy! It sounds like he'll be going to a good place though and that's great.

The heats just been crazy everywhere this year! I was worried I'd oops somehow in my garden this year because we got no flowers on anything over the summer.... we usually get peppers and Barbados cherries over the summer. But just when I started to fuss about it, suddenly everything went into bloom.
20220902_081330.jpg

So hopefully we'll have some fruit before long. I did some reading and peppers don't tend to fruit in high heat. Ours are chiltepins and tabascos though that have fruited well even with the heat in years past. But this year was just too hot.☹️

I absolutely love your brooder in the window! Well, I love your brooder and it being in the window is just fun❤️. I'll have to get pictures of my brooder when I go inside. You'll either laugh or be appalled 🤣.

And your pasture pic makes me want to grab a good book, some alphalfa pellets for treats, and go lounge in the shade there.

I just HATE the heat. I get reverse seasonal affective disorder…summer makes me depressed instead of cold dark winters 😆
OMGoodness! It is a thing!!! Possibly the only cure is a swimming pool and ice cream!? I don't know, I don't have either lol. I really should just go float in the ocean but hubby went the day b4 and said it was warm 😕 plus UV rays and Iife etc. I think your retirement plan sounds good. 👍👍👍
