What did you do with your flock today?

I don’t, they’re all just collecting on my counter. 😅 I’ve blown a few of them out for fake eggs, but I need to do more now that I have a few extra layers.
Yeah, I’m sure they could. I never like eating quail eggs back when I had them, but the size made them pretty good for egg washes.
Although unlike chicken/duck/quail/etc. eggs, pigeons only lay after mating so I feel a little weird eating them. I know it’s pretty much the same as all the others, but I just haven’t gotten used to it yet. 😅
I wish I'd thought to take away eggs when we still had pigeons...we might still have them if I had! Ours started with one rescued male who brought home a wife when we tried to release him. 🤣
I like the idea of egg washes. All the ways I like quail eggs involves peeling teeny boiled eggs and feels labor intensive.
I hear ya on that. I at least give my husband a break from building coops…probably a nice thing I can do. I just want the Brahmas in their own thing. I checked Cackle at the beginning of November and they weren’t yet….all the ones I want though are pre order available now😁😁😁. That’s where I have gotten all mine so far. I like that it is only about 4 hours away from me.
4 hours! I would so love that. I tried ordering chicks this spring and ended up never getting the babies I wanted. I ended up with a lot of dead chicks and a lot of wrong breed that I gave away. It was the worst experience I've ever had with mail order chicks.
My Cackle order was perfect though!

I got 2 Dark Brahmas from an emergency sale (poultry rescuer had to move). They are sweet girls. Will complain loudly when first caught, but tolerate any treatment quite calmly. All my chickens are not acclimated to become cuddly, percher pets, but are just normal chickens, who respond to treat calls, and being let out, and are friendly. Newer, younger ones are skittish, but should settle once they are laying. Once thought I could make a pet out of a cockerel chick, but he ended up being a backstabber, i.e. attacking from behind. Not sad he died.
Oh yum! Dark Brahma's :love nice nice bird. Congratulations 😁 photos?!

Yeah, I'm kinda with you on the lap bird. I rarely sit long enough for a cuddle if I do a cat finds me first. I basically get swarmed, not cuddled. With food, I get mobbed.

Bad rooster! I have never had a bad one yet but yesterday while transferring my last pasture roo to the coop he bit me on my hand. I was actually really proud of him for protecting himself so I put my hand out again to see if he would bite it and he did. Lol

So right now I have 7 roosters crowing in my back yard. The full moon does not help.
Story is, the guy who let his 4 boys with me let 4 more out on the other end of the ranch and they started causing trouble and my boys started getting blamed. So DH and I went on a late-night rooster raid to get the 4 on the other end and then yesterday I was able to hand catch 2 and trap 2 of our 4. I posted an add and the nice gal is coming to pick up 3 this morning. That was kind of the hope and plan, just sped up. Till then... cockadoodledoo! 🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓
If by some chance you are wondering why the math does not add up is because only 5 came home with us. Plus my 2.... and so on. Chicken drama

Who did you order through??? I have heard of that happening from a few places. McMurray I have read a lot of problems with.

So I did another auction and was bidding on some doll furniture for my kiddos. Well they also had an incubator and tray….that went to $32 and I had to back out of that. I had no idea if it would even work or even for how long. But there was other chicken items but they must not have been paying attention or just didn’t have a place to put it so put it with the doll stuff. Either way…I’m happy with it! 😁 I knew what it was and I only got it, with a box of other things for only $1. It is the cutest egg holder!

I also was driving to go pick up DH from work and the sun set was just amazing.

Pigeon pairs are so cute. I love watching them preen each other. <3 You said you have doves now, right?
Ohhh, that sounds like it would take forever, especially if you had to boil and peel enough for more than one person. :th

That egg holder is so cute!

It is cold and wet outside, supposed to rain all day and most of my dummies are sopping wet :rolleyes: I will probably go outside later and wipe them down with a dry towel but instead of staying in the coop they are out in the mud *smh*

I decided to make them some warm cream of wheat mixed with cooked veggies and also gave them zucchinis and squashes to entertain them and some chard and spinach and lettuce for some greens. Hopefully that will give them something to do so they warm up and some vitamins so they don't get sick. I hate when weather like this happens right before vacation. I lost so many birds in November of last year thanks to all the rain. BLAH. I will be spreading straw, pine shavings and FSL as soon as the rain stops tomorrow. Dry out as much as I possibly can!

Currently have a chicken in the house getting treatment, but I'm not sure what is wrong with her--she sits around a lot sort of fluffed up and lethargic but has NO other symptoms. No signs of illness, poo looks healthy, last night she finally ate and drank water, her eyes are bright, no sign of worms or mites. 🤷‍♀️ So she has gotten meds, colloidal silver, a worming, CORID water, Rooster Booster, and scrambled eggs with Nutridrench in it. I have thrown the kitchen sink at her, and I can't really do more that doesn't require pricey vet visits. She's one my black Ameraucana teenager, so she's not really egg laying age either I don't think. I have palpated her and don't feel anything...she's soooo soft and shiny and her green sheen is amazing...I really hope the meds do their job. :( Think good thoughts for her!

It's been raining here too - for about a week and it's not doing their feet any good at all! We're under a housing order with the avian flu here so tomorrow they're getting a full run revamp. Normally they all just free range so it's hard for them in confinement. I'm slabbing the whole run and then putting a layer of sand down. Hopefully, it'll help keep their feet dry and it'll give me a chance to dig out the frickin' rats i just found today!

I had another hen, Alice, who passed from egg yolk periontitis at 18 months. She displayed the symptoms you're describing with your girl for the first month or so before she started displaying more classic symptoms. If I'd realised earlier we might have been able to do better for her. I miss her so much, she was such a sweet girl. Not trying to say I think that's the problem with your girl, just that these things can be so hard to pin down. One of my ex-battery hens, Connie, frightened the life out of me by acting exactly the same way as yours. Turned out she just wanted a bit of tlc and pampering in the house, a after she cost me a fortune at my vets! She really didn't like rain and pulled the same stunt a few times after that. Little bugger!:D
