What did you do with your flock today?

It is cold and wet outside, supposed to rain all day and most of my dummies are sopping wet I will probably go outside later and wipe them down with a dry towel but instead of staying in the coop they are out in the mud *smh*

I decided to make them some warm cream of wheat mixed with cooked veggies and also gave them zucchinis and squashes to entertain them and some chard and spinach and lettuce for some greens. Hopefully that will give them something to do so they warm up and some vitamins so they don't get sick. I hate when weather like this happens right before vacation. I lost so many birds in November of last year thanks to all the rain. BLAH. I will be spreading straw, pine shavings and FSL as soon as the rain stops tomorrow. Dry out as much as I possibly can!

Currently have a chicken in the house getting treatment, but I'm not sure what is wrong with her--she sits around a lot sort of fluffed up and lethargic but has NO other symptoms. No signs of illness, poo looks healthy, last night she finally ate and drank water, her eyes are bright, no sign of worms or mites. So she has gotten meds, colloidal silver, a worming, CORID water, Rooster Booster, and scrambled eggs with Nutridrench in it. I have thrown the kitchen sink at her, and I can't really do more that doesn't require pricey vet visits. She's one my black Ameraucana teenager, so she's not really egg laying age either I don't think. I have palpated her and don't feel anything...she's soooo soft and shiny and her green sheen is amazing...I really hope the meds do their job. Think good thoughts for her!

Purely Poultry. They play middleman so when you order through them, the chicks are actually coming from another outfit. In this case Ideal Poultry shipped my chicks. Purely offers a correct breed guarantee and Ideal doesn't, so I chose to order through Purely.
The first round all died because the post office tried to deliver the chicks instead of holding for pick up (yes they had instructions to hold). Second two tries the post office did better but Ideal sent the wrong birds with no gel etc and the chicks arrived, but barely. Shipping was long...the wrong bird shipments each could be picked up the morning of the fourth, then third day of shipping. So I gave up and got a refund. Too many poor poor babies involved in all of it and the birds that survived weren't what I wanted so I gave them to my neighbor once they were stable and growing well.
I kind of think it's because Tucson's USPS distribution center had just been consolidated with Phoenix. Yet Cackles shipment also had to go through that point and theirs arrived in two days, 100% alive and healthy. But Ideals might have had more consolidated offices to pass through.
Anyhow....I've never felt so so bad for ordering chicks.

I have one left. When we went on our trip, my pet sitter goofed and failed to feed them consistently. Lunatic is still strong and healthy. I think Lunatics a girl (will be sure by next spring) and definitely lonely. She dances along the bars asking for attention when she can see me and settles down when I come talk to her. I'm not sure yet what I'll do for company for her yet. I'm not sure where I can buy a dove locally and it might be years before someone brings me an injured one to raise. Hoping to buy her a mate though as soon as I'm sure of sex. They bond so strong to their mates.

That's so sad, I'm so sorry to hear that. : ( Do you have a humane society near you? They wouldn't be as tame, but I've found a lot of nice birds at mine. Plus at least in my area, the HS is always full of doves. No matter where you decide to look, I hope you can find her a buddy.

Thank you! I love them too, they're mega weirdos. Squirrel has, on multiple occasions, stood on other birds while I'm holding them. She has no shame, lol.
I'm really excited to finally have another blue egger. Now I'm just hoping Fergus will also lay blue, but I'd take green, too. They turn 27wo tomorrow, so I should get another one any day now.

Well, this morning is a nice reprieve with only 4 crowing boys. Much better.

I will head to Lihue town early to drop the stand and bags with KHS, fill DH's truck with gas, pick up feed & wood along with my small shopping list.

Share is in her last moments. I have her in the brooder on the lawn so she can enjoy safely. I have some favorite foods and water for her but she is done with eating and drinking. Her comb color is fading and has a touch more blue. My husband wants to cull but I just don't have the heart. I want her to go peacefully, kindly with dignity and no fear.

Welp. Time to get moving.

@Gammas Bearded Babies I think losing chicks is hard and I am sorry. All that promise and so fragile. I read the first and last page of your thread. You have some great help/advise. I'm hoping baby rallies ♡ Very cute cusper.

Share made it to 5yo. She died peacefully this morning. I believe she had a good chicken life with me. She was never gluttonous but also never a very good layer. Ascites happens ☹ I'm grateful she was able to rally, go up the mountain with me and the flock for a few months before succumbing to her disease. I have been expecting to have some losses with my older gals and feel prepared- just a bit sad as I will miss her/them.
In the chicken run I dug her grave a few feet deep, placed her on a nice bed of dried nesting grass, topped her with her loved compost and planted a Wai Apple tree I grew from seed. Hopefully, it will grow well, provide more shade and drop fruit to her flock. So, Share-ing in her after life RIP Share

I have heard of this as well!! Poor little things!! My post office was going to deliver mine to my house too even though it stated otherwise. Luckily I called to figure out where they were cause of course tracking stinks. I was able to tell them we would pick them up instead. But what has happened is they get the chicks at noon and then they do the country routes. And since we are about 10 min from the post office we would be one of the first for the route but I still wasn’t comfortable with that. I have had nothing but AMAZING from Cackle.

Poor Share. I'm so glad she was blessed with a momma like you. She had a full life with no worries and lots to be happy about.

Thanks for all the good thoughts everyone! I’m honestly not sure how Raven is doing. She’s really thin but she’s eating and drinking and pooping…I decided to let her go outside to see if the warm sun and chicken friends help her feel more like herself. She walked sort of slowly and deliberately but did have water, ate some treats, and found her friends. Gonna check on her in a bit but wanted to let her have some time without me hovering! Fingers crossed she’s out of the woods…
