What did you do with your flock today?

II was at work till 3, and with the short days, cold, and snow, I try to get right home for some time with them. They were out on Sunday during the mild snowstorm. Then the temp dropped. Today they went out briefly, in the area I had shovelled. I lightly steamed some cabbage for their treat and hung out with them in the dome until they went in the coop.
I stayed in the coop for a while as usual, talking to each one and petting them. I ended with the usual, " good night ladies. Be good to each other, keep each other cozy. Thank you for the beautiful eggs. Sleep well and have good chicken dreams. I will see you in the morning"

I strangely said yes to chick sitting 12 big chicks for 2 weeks. Absolutely madness on my part 🤦‍♀️ but it is for a super good reason. So cleaned out the 2 roo coops, spread fresh mulch etc. All good, cute gang.
Had to do some shuffling with my peeps. Have 3 boys in the main coop now 😂 Moved some old biddies back into the main coop.... just think, only 2 more weeks of doing the chicken shuffle every night 🤣🤣🤣

Got 30 bags finished and dropped in Lihue town. Feels great to get that off of my plate. Gotta start back up but not with that kind of pressure.
I am going to treat myself and chooks to some fresh mulch in the run this week! Gotta go load it up but heck, finding the time was the hard part.

I don't even have my Christmas pillows out. Some years, this year it was not important. Maybe next year right?

Sorry about the rodents and the cold weather folks. I hope all fares well... except for the 🐀🐁🐁🐀🐀🐀

Ooh! The rotten little 💩!!! I don't use canned fillings either and make my own pastry so I'd have been furious too! It did make me laugh though :lau Sorry.

Elliot sounds like Peaches. I once saw him catch a mouse and proceed to lick it to death. Once it was good and dead, he sort of recoiled in shock then made an enormous 'huffing noise and lay his head down next to the corpse. He's such a silly sausage 🤣
🤣 We never caught ours doing it…just that it was wet, like really wet. 🤢

I freshened up the sand in one of my coops as all 8 of my hens decided to live in this coop and not coop in with the rooster at night for a few weeks as they were molting and didnt want the rooster chasing them into submission but kicked a few out to move back in their ori coop the ones done molting because this coop was getting to crowded for me and took two and added them to Mr cheeks for now as they should be laying they are young pullets

I waited until it was light enough (8ish this time of year) to make sure no owls were hanging around. Had a couple hooting to each other just before 8 last week between the house and coop and I was not taking any chances. Weather has drastically improved this week into single Celsius digits and the chickens have been loving it.

I go out in the morning to open up their coop, scrape roosting bars before they freeze, and get their feeders and heated waterers filled. Check on them every couple of hours to collect eggs, bring snacks, and make sure everyone is generally doing ok.

An hour before sunset I go in to turn on their overhead light in their coop so that everyone can make it up to the roosting bars. An hour later I go and collect the few birds that decided tonight would be a good night to sleep outside.

A few minutes later I go in to turn off their night light once everyone has found their spot.
Like @The Tiny Homestead i bid my girls and currently too many boys a good night.

It makes me a very lucky human to have such quality in my life. I'll enjoy it while I got it. Things change quickly ♡♡♡ so by grace I go.
That is fantastic. I finally moved out of the city into a rural life after longing for it for almost five decades. Even though life was easier and certainly cleaner, I'm grateful every day for where I am, despite the harsh weather.
