Dents?

I can't tell if it is frostbite or not...
Did u check the roost to see of there was ice on it?
I noticed when cleaning off the snow on my roost bars that there was a thin layer of ice where they normally are at near the door.
It xould very well be that he stuck to that?

Sorry…scents. I have no idea why it said dents silly phone. I didn’t check the roost only because they were all on it that night. Luckily I didn’t have ice in the coop. From your picture you had put up it honestly looks like you got more snow than we did. Our snow did a lot more blowing around and creating a lot of drifts.

The only reason im concerned about frostbite is because he is one of the silly ones that stayed out all day. AND was under the coop and wasn’t moving. I finally decided to try to get them some cracked corn to get them out from under there. It worked and I had my daughter help me get them into the coop. There is a small piece of his skin pulled off of his toes (on the top) and the bottom of his foot is a little swollen but im wondering if that could be from him roosting on it and then standing on it. I went ahead and gave him an epson salt bath with lavender and mint. I figured it had to be better than nothing. At least until tomorrow.

Yeah I can't tell from pic I'm sorry...that Epson salt should be fine though since u can use essential oils typically with em anyway.
I was thinking a make do sling to let the foot have time to not have any pressure on it.

Ok guys… I need help and advice. I noticed my cockerel wasn’t really coming off the roost bar. I thought maybe it was because it was cold and he was trying to keep himself and feet warm, so I didn’t bother him. He was crowing yesterday and this morning. Today though I opened their door and none really came out right away. So I gave them a while and went to check. Cockerel was still on the roost bar. Normally he would have been out by now, at least I would have thought because he is ALWAYS the first one out the door. I picked him up to check his feet and then I noticed some of his skin on his foot was torn off. And it was slightly swollen. So I tried to put him back on the roost so I could look more into this. He got down and was limping. So I went inside and cleaned up the kennel the goats were in, which luckily I had already started.

So know I need help with what to do. I want to do the Epson salt soak but I don’t have any and ALL the stores are closed. I know I should put at least triple antibiotic on it, without the numbing medicine. I will note that inside he is standing on it. But seriously it is a zoo in here so it doesn’t surprise me he is nervous. I put a blanket over the kennel but he still won’t lay down. I’m going to my moms house and I’m going to see if she happens to have any of this on hand. He is eating and drinking, at least a little while I was setting next to him talking.

I wouldn't guess frostbite just because his toes look fine. Not that I know Jack about frostbite...but it seems illogical to me. I'd think it's about that torn spot and maybe a joint/bone/ligament injury or infection. I like the idea of some kind of sling...I just don't know how you'd manage it on a full grown bird. I'd do a soak without scent, ointment and a quiet space for him to relax and lay down as much as he needs.

Could you put ointment after a soak and wrap his foot, much like after a bumblefoot surgery? That would protect the open sore. Maybe even check for bumblefoot. Looks really swollen.

Great for yolk color! I add it to the soldier fly larvae/oatmeal treats along with cayenne.

Between rain spells, refilled water after removing ice in the nipple bucket, and refilled all the feeders. They were so happy to see grass again. Finished just in time before the rain became heavy. We are all adults, so the boys slept in, we had a lovely buffet dinner, and opened presents tonight. Hope you all enjoyed the holiday.

Have you got any sea salt or even kitchen salt? That will help kill any infection and soothe the wound if you use that in your foot soak. I wouldn't use scented Epsom salts in case it irritates the wound. Unless it's made with pure essential oils? That should be fine.

So to everyone who responded….I did soak his foot last night is the epson salt I had, which did have mint and lavender essential oils. It didn’t seem to bother him and he sat so well for me. Yes i held him in my lap so he didn’t have to stand on it. I think though I will try the table salt. I was trying to see if any of that kind of salt would work but never really found anything. I don’t know it’s bumblefoot but the bottom somewhat looks like it could be but there isn’t a place on entrance or anything to say that there is something in it. Maybe it’s infected or what I’m really hoping for…is just irritated. I will see if I can’t get a picture of the bottom of it.
