What did you do with your flock today?

Landrace breeds are chickens that have developed into a recognizable breed by natural selection rather then breeders choice. They're well suited to whatever area they're from. Even though their recognizable as a breed, they usually have some variations still.

The dwarfs are my first experience with landrace chickens. Can't say I have a program other than to try to figure out their genes and what variations they can produce. Just curiosity and fascination.

I've wanted to try making moon cakes like they do for the Chinese new year. Hope you find something yummy for the weekend

If you do make moon cakes, please share your recipe. This came so early this year, that it caught me by surprise. Oh, if you haven't guessed, I am Chinese. Every year I reminisce about all the wonderful dishes that my mom would make for this holiday. My little brain is trying to decide what to make, other than Monk's Food, a mostly vegetarian first meal for the New Year. ( It may have dried oysters, and oyster sauce) probably make a coconut sticky rice cake, and some kind of (I won't tell my feathered kids), chow mein, and maybe wonton soup. For only the three of us, it's a major production, and I still have to go shopping for some ingredients 30 miles away. I may decide not to make all of this. Making lower sodium Pad Thai today. It's been rainy, but the run and coop are staying relatively dry, despite the tarps now getting condensation as well. Didn't check for eggs yesterday, but getting ready to go out and give them some leftover bread treat and let them out, since it's not raining hard at the moment.

I love those natural perches! How do you think they compare to more "standard" perches? Do you think your birds like them more?

I love them, the chooks seem to love them too! I had a ramp they never used so replaced everything in the big coop with thought out and well placed hops. It has served us well. No bumble foot, different heights for different moods and ranks.
I won't use dimensional lumber and am lucky enough to get my roosts from the beach as Beachwood is bug free.

You're birds are so beautiful! such pretty colours!

There's definitely lavender genes in the boys and Penelope.
Sylv was lavender out of lavender parents with blue in his ancestry as the reverse of his flight feathers was a rich, smoky blue (a dead giveaway apparently). Ferdy is a blue splash. His mom is my blue mottled girl, Clara (We think, Pru actually brooded them with eggs of her own but Clara kept laying eggs under her - the chicken calculator came out as her being the most likely biological parent). Stan looks to be going to be solid blue eventually with rusty red leakage, his mom is my black mottled hen, Pru. The leakage shows well on Ferdy but doesn't show on photos of Stan yet.
I have no idea what the mottled girls have in their ancestry. Colour inheritance is predictable but still interesting -and always capable of throwing up surprises every now and again!

I stood outside yesterday and let the sun shine on my face…felt so good! Chickens were so happy!

Bruno seems to be doing better today! Yay! He’s still favoring the leg some, but no longer hiding with droopy wings and came out for treats. It’s lightly raining at the moment but supposed to stop at 1 am and no rain in the forecast for 10 days! Woohoo!

Korean here and same on memories of moms cooking . New years she'd fill the table with everyone's favorites. So much work but so much pleasure too.

We're going into a long cold snap here...over a week with nights down in the low 30's to freezing and days in the 50's. We're used to no more then a few days like that so hoping my heat spoiled chickens and plants all handle it ok.

Yay for Bruno feeling better Hope your coming dry spell is warm and helpful.

Well, my yokos are definitely sick. It's just their coop with illness but it's several birds showing swelling around one eye. Very worried it's going to spread to my other flocks. The only good thing I can think of is that their coop and run is away from the rest...not far enough to really be happy though. I had already integrated my young ones with the adults...so all my yokos are in that one coop. Hoping it's not mycoplasma as the recommendation is to cull every bird in the flock, healthy or sick. All these years with chickens and never seen this before... feeling down just thinking about if it is.

Going to move them all out to my oldest coop that the adults had been in. It's a half acre from the house and might protect my other birds. My youngest is staying away from the yokos and caring for the other birds while I doctor the yokos and shower after. Flushed all the swollen eyes, dosed them with terramycin and tetracycline. No one's showing any respiratory signs still.

Read about something called swollen head syndrome and rather hoping it's that. Lots of things it could be but those are the only two I've found so far that sound more likely to me.

I can't stand the thought of maybe having to cull them all. All my neighbors have birds too though so it's not just mine I'm risking if it is mycoplasma. I haven't called for the test yet...I'll have to do that tomorrow. If the test comes back positive, maybe they'll have advice too.

Sure hoping you don't have myco. That would be so devastating to have to cull.

Lowered the feeder stop to the next notch, so that it now stays open only half way, and make the motion and some noise while closing. I think they are smart enough to get accustomed to it in a few days, and then I can let it close all the way, and then voila, no more rats raiding the food at night. Noticed there is a lot less waste with these. Cock E is still not liking me being in there near his girls. He is posturing even more, and his nail went through my pant leg today. I may need to just throw fed elsewhere before I go inside the run yard, so they are all elsewhere when I come in. They always come to the gate for treats, and he feels invaded.

I did! Being able to cook Korean food was a big help when we moved so far away from family. Everytime I got homesick, I'd cook a big feast of Korean foods. My mom keeps teaching me even now ..I'll call her up and she'll tell me all the details for different dishes. My kids love my cooking but they tell me grandma's japchae is still better than mine ...then she asks me if I put a pinch of perilla powder in .
