What did you do with your flock today?

Yay, got my hand free, stitches out. Except, I won't be able to do pinch motions for a few more weeks. So thankful that I have a removable splint that I can remove to shower. Now for PT and OT later. It'll take 8 more months before it's back to normal strength.
Deworming today, so made thin medicated oatmeal, and separated into two containers and split the girls up. Seemed everyone got what they needed without being chased away.
Only 6 eggs today, but it's been cold and nasty.
Velma, the chick, is feathering out nicely.

@kurby22 , such a whole new journey in your poultry life. As with many things, we learn the most as we do, and make mistakes as well. All the best to you. Oh, those #^^÷%% rats! How distressing and sad to find dead/injured birds. Hoping for a better solution. Do you have a cat?
I know—I’m enjoying it and stressing out at the same time haha. I’m not real good with making mistakes or letting people down. I’m learning that I just need to embrace the chaos and own it. Someday maybe!

We don’t have an outdoor cat but I’m looking into getting one!!

This is what is left of my water plants after the chickens... 🙄

New pot with water and plant runners. Hope it does not get too hot for the fishes in this deep pot.

Here's a funny 💩💩 story. Got Velma the chick out to let her play, perch, spend some time with me. Not only did she have one cecal poo, which she dropped down the front of my shoulder, but the second one later on, I was not aware had dropped onto my fingers. My phone was kind of on a shelf above me, so I dragged it by the cord to drop into my good hand to answer a call. I put the phone back down, and put her away. Go to change clothes, wash hands and rinse sweater. Came back out and picked up my phone. It's a little dimly lit, and I feel this weird sticky, stinky stuff on my fingers. So go wash my hands again, then find the 💩 smeared on the phone case. Took the case off, washed it and my hands again. Why couldn't she have done regular 💩? And 2 times in a row. I'll have double good luck, maybe.:lau

Last year, before the great fence was installed, the girls destroyed my fuschia plant, and dug up the primroses. I think I might have flowers this year, if the deer don't eat them. Those pots are lovely. Especially the last one.

I love her name! 😍

So glad your hand is healing well! I remember how awesome it felt to get to shower like a normal person again after weeks with a Saran wrapped knee. It’s really hard to shower while avoiding getting part of you wet! Sounds like you might need a shower after all the chick poop 😁 I have totally been there! Chicks have a lot of gross poops too. 🤪 Good thing they’re so cute!!

I wish I had a better catch today. One hatched and both hens killed it. 😭😭😭 I brought the other 5 in and have them in the incubator. We will see if they are accepted when they hatch and I take them out there.

Honestly, if they even hatch. I only see movement in one egg.
Sorry that happened! Poor chick. Do you know about escape cages for integrating chicks? Or are you planning on seeing if the first mom will adopt these babies? Good luck with it all!

Glad your stitches are out and you have a removable splint now! Bit of a long haul to go still but sounds like you're doing well ❤️‍🩹.
Does Velma get a Shaggy and Scooby to hang out with?

I love those...even with chickens saying yum over them 🤣. You'll find plants they leave alone over time. My chickens leave my pond buckets alone for some reason. Maybe because most of my birds are midgets so the plants are above their heads. I keep papyrus and minari in one, water iris and minari in another, and pickerel weed and pennywort in a third...though I keep trying to get the pennywort out of there so it doesn't take over. Then two that are just duckweed... everyone loves duckweed treats so I keep a lot of it growing. I have one bucket pond out in the main yard that the horse and goat can get to...that one only the duck weed survives long term and only because its too small for them to eat so easily. But having some easy to reach pond plants keeps them from risky behavior from trying to get at the plants in the in ground pond. They don't need much to satisfy their taste for it.

Really love the dark blue one... beautiful color, shape and texture to it. 😍

Another soft egg remnant yesterday. 🤨 Guess the oyster shell needs a couple days to work? They all seem normal, running to and following any possible treat dispenser walking near the fence. Add monkey sounds and it seems like I am hearing zoo noises. Hoping I don't find anymore yolk smears
It's pouring today, and still chilly. DH is finishing up the kratky hydroponic tubes so I can plant the Chinese broccoli babies. The plums are in full bloom, but the bees do not like this weather. @Shetland lover , isn't your home area around the same latitude as Washington? Hence similar weather. I occasionally watch garden videos which have English hosts. I also have an apple tree which hails from England called Greensleeves.View attachment 3470100
I think we are, yes! Although we've had 2 days of relatively sunny weather (been too unwell to enjoy it though and we have a friend's funeral to attend today).
I've heard of Greensleeves but I've never tasted them. What are they like, taste-wise?
We grow Pittmaston Pineapple apples which date from the 17th century and do taste of pineapple once fully ripe. They are delicious and store well but they're very small and only fruit well every other year. I suppose that's why so few people grow them anymore.
We also grow more normal types too.
Are you able to get a U.K. gardening programme called "Beechgrove"? It's set in Aberdeenshire and i find it very useful in letting me know when i ought to be doing certain things in the garden as they are roughly a week to two weeks behind the rest of the country.

I found a link to some nice scone recipes for your Afternoon Tea, they're all from the National Trust and I've not tried them all but those I have are delicious. A little tip, don't roll them out too thinly. There's nothing worse than a flat scone, they should be fat and fluffy.

The 2nd link has some nice cakes you might be able to use too.

Spent some time alone with my babies outside while my husband took the kids to the park for some batting practice 😍 Wilhelm wanted nothing to do with his bantam run friends, shoved the gate open and ran over to me and jumped up and slept on my shoulder in the sun. ❤️

Little roo sure does love his mommy! Isn't it the loveliest feeling? 😍
Your self-blue babies are too cute for words!

Gladys and Stanley have produced fertile eggs. It's killing me that I can't hatch a few...
