What did you do with your flock today?

Today I'm mowing to stir up any bugs then cutting the older birds loose for their first free range as I will be outside all day in this beautiful sunny 70+ degree day to keep an eye on things. The younger birds will get their first outing in the 16x20 run.
That sounds like lots of fun, also sounds like you have had to wait awhile for some nice days. Hope your day is awesome. 🌞🤙

So... This seems like a great way to say hi to everyone...

I treated bumble foot on a hen and un-tongue tied a pullet today.

First time for the bumble foot. Second time for the tongue problem, but it was more difficult this time around.

I'm exhausted, but satisfied. How are you all?
Welcome @Maddcatter 👋😺 and the other fine folks who have jumped into the conversation and recording of their chicken frolicking observations and such. Good to see you join in, we are glad to have you!

🌺 Happy Aloha saturday all!
I'm headed up the mountain to do some work. Yippee! Gotta tear apart the cabin for some deep cleaning, and then there is the yard... So gunna be missing my chooks again today 😕
As soon as it is light I will get out and do my chicken chores. Till then, coffee!

I've turned all the grownups out to free range early. Today they are getting grass & clover for an appetizer before I give them their daily ration of pellets at lunch time. Later in the evening they'll get a can of cracked corn. I withheld the corn yesterday to encourage them to forage more in the grass and clover area.

Oh man!! Chickens find more ways to hurt themselves I swear! They’re like little kids…hey Mom, what’s this light socket do if I stick this metal in it? 🤦🏼‍♀️ Poor girl! I’m impressed that you were able to help! Mine get very non compliant when I mess with their beak! 😆
I had 2 full grown men holding her to keep her still (one for her body, one for her head and beak). There is no way I would have been able to find that thread if I had to hold her and look.

*Update* tongue tied chick is now eating and drinking normally! Yay!

I got all the hwc in yesterday. Nestboxes and roosts up and shuffled my chickens around. Today I need to turn the dirt in a couple coops and pick more veggies. It's already hot enough that my favorite garden bed is wilting almost daily. I don't want to strip out all the plants but think I'm going to have to pull almost all the collards and beets if I want to get seeds for next year. Fewer plants should help the few I leave get enough water to get them through to seeding. The birds always love it when I pull plants.
Have some clean up to do after my chickens too...the ones I let out yesterday had too much fun in the garden...they raked dirt out all over the flagstones and pooped in the courtyard while bug hunting. They normally stay out of the courtyard just because it's no fun for them...all rock and brick. But yesterday it pleased them for some reason 🫤. Lil goofballs!

Expo day! It’s a happening place today! 😍

Closed in the space between the coop and the shop wall today with rabbit hutch floor welded wire, 1/2 x 1. I still need to install the hardware cloth above the coop, maybe today. Maybe not. haha

Other pic shows how I closed in the gap at the bottom of the coop. Getting closer finishing the run. My chicks are getting bigger and pooping bigger and they need more space. They're handling being confined to the 4x8 coop just fine, since confinement is all they've known. They're not going to know what to do when they have an extra 100 square feet to run around in. LOL

Edited to add: I had the energy to finish closing in the space above the coop with hardware cloth. And I didn't rip my hands up cutting the HWC. A little trimming out tomorrow and that side of the run will be secure. The big, front wall is next. Should be easy, just time consuming.
