What did you do with your flock today?

I have a few of those. One rooster especially. He gets some hand feeding of table food a couple times a week to keep him remembering who takes care of him.

I like to hand feed my guys too. Feels like a status thing, like I up his status in the eys of the flock. Plus, keeps him calm and close for those hands on checks and leg slathers.

Woke @2. Can't sleep, can't move, wonder why... ?

Must be these heavy blankets.

Yesterday I had to head down the hill to deliver cat food to a guy who basically has a colony of cats that we will be trapping. He is doing us a great favor by feeding them and allowing us access to capture and fix. Wonderful, kind hearted guy who appreciates the help. So, always a nice visit. Had to do the delivery of 40lbs of dry, plus a case of canned on Boo lol. Is there any other way?!! DH is replacing some bushings on my truck, hope to get her back tomorrow. Filled my duffel bag with security cams for the mountain coop, nesting materials and treats for chooks. Feels so good the have the nesting boxes off my list and now being able to move on.
I have been weedwhacking the yard and raking, cleaning the blackberry off the side of the road and raking everything up. Need to repair the guava fence now that the trees are done and continue work on the walkways.

Momma Hope and crew christened one of the new boxes for sleeping last eve. Very nice! Looking forward to coffee and my new day in a few more hours.

Ugh, it's another mystery...I'm starting to think my soil has issues I should test! It again is only affecting a chicken that is recessive genetically.

She came up lame the day before we left for our vacation and when I picked her up, her legs were all swollen and hot to the touch! I brought her in and gave her Enrofloxacin in her water and slathered her legs with vaseline. By Wednesday, her legs were still swollen and also her little comb had ballooned up as well. She has no other signs of illness or bumblefoot except the weird swelling, so switched her meds to an all in one med--with a percentage of doxycycline, enroflox, ronadazole, and one other thing. I also started applying magnesium oils to her legs instead of vaseline and supplemented her with a mix of oils that help lower uric acid. Trying to cover all the things I could think it might be. The leg swelling is way down and her feet are much cooler, but now have scabs and look like they are healing from sores. The comb hasn't gone down much though and she definitely doesn't feel well. She eats some, drinks some, and sleeps a lot...but she is standing again and last weekend she didn't want to stand at all. Any ideas?

It did feel good being back with them...just wish it didn't require the heat too! I love just watching them.

I reunited some brooder buddies in an outdoor hoop coop brooder house. So far no problems. They are the last hatch of the year from May. I may get a notion to hatch a few chicks from the February order of Dark Cornish and White Giants. Remote possibility for a few Bresse. Right now it is hot enough just to put the eggs down on the ground and incubate them during the day. Heat would only be needed at night for hatchlings.

Berries! Such lucky Chickies!
I'm not sure but I do know that Greenfire farm offers the legbars in two colors. I can't remember why, just remember noting that they do. Ones whiter, ones redder if I remember right.

From what I was told, she was one of a bunch purchased at a feed store. Here's top view. No black barring on front of neck. Such a mystery. By golly, @Shetland lover, she could be a gold legbar. She could be a gold legbar. They were created as a separate breed in the UK in the 1930's. They have black barring on the neck and are roughly Velma's colours. They also lay white eggs rather than blue.
I've also seen a silkie x light Sussex mix in the exact same colour pattern with a crest.

I was hoping for blue eggs. I'll let you all know when she lays in a couple months.

Blackberries?! I didn't know you had those there. Are all the chooks up Koke'e now? Work is never done, but the satisfaction from finishing projects is priceless.
