What did you do with your flock today?

I'll look for some seeds! We get really huge, wild vines on our blue banana squash but the wildest squash vine has got to be the Naples Long we grew last year! It filled our polytunnel and exploded out of it for another 30ft or so. It was a colossal waste of time as the 4 fruit it carried were eaten by rabbits just before they matured!
I've tried twice to grow delicata with little success. I got no fruit the first time and harvested ONE slightly immature fruit last year! We had a great summer last year so I am wondering if our season is a little too short for them outdoors this far north?

I've never tried to make wine but I'm fascinated by the process. I bet peach wine is utterly delightful! My uncles and grandad used to home brew and ferment. My uncle's plum wine was to die for.
I think you're wise to wait before embarking on a sticky task, when I had my carpal tunnel surgery 14 years ago, I got bored and made raspberry jam. BIG mistake! I ended having to go back to the hospital just to get my dressings changed and a lecture on using my hand before I should. If only I'd wrapped the dressing in a plastic bag!

I think we are at about the same latitude, but weather can be hard to predict. A friend recommended Delicata years ago, and I haven't been successful in the few times I tried. Giving up on those. Might try a bush turban next season. Did not have to grow winter squash in Texas, as very successful sweet potatoes made a great garden and table substitute. And, no squash bug problems. My Greensleeves apple is an English variety.
Wine seems to be the best way to "preserve" fruit for us. Not much jam or canned fruit or jams get eaten, and makes a great gift. The process is easy. Just the waiting isn't...... Can't rush the aging process. Luckily, non grape fruit wines mature between 6-12 months. The plum wine is in the second ferment and racking. Looks to be around 14%. I've never made peach wine before. Here's a crazy thing. I hardly drink alcohol, because genetically my liver doesn't have the enzyme to process alcohol, so it goes straight into my bloodstream. Just enjoy making it.

Repeat broody Onyx is in jail. I saw that Houdini mounted Velma ( the rescued chick from March) yesterday. Do roosters know when it's time, and the girls are laying, or close? There was a long smallish egg the other day. It could be hers. Yay!
I think my over 3 y.o. girls are slowing down. (Some days only 4 or 5 eggs, up to 8 or 9 from 14 girls).

I lost a young pullet due to being heavily raped before I could get to her. If I could have caught those two roosters I would have started the preparations for chicken and dumplings on the spot.

Picked up some chickens from a friend whos laid up for a bit. I couldn't take them all in but took in a handful... hopefully not for too long. And hopefully she can find others to take in more birds and her dogs.

Rest of the day was errands and jelly making. Made prickly pear jelly with my youngest. I haven't made jelly in a few years and it was a pleasant surprise to have her ask me. It was a good time spending most of the day in the kitchen with her...even if I ended up listening to her music the whole time . Had to make two batches of jelly to use up all the prickly pears we picked!

All solid floors here too! I hate carpet to be honest...even my 8x10 throw rugs are machine washable. Found a lovely company called ruggables that makes these wonderful machine washable rugs that look like the normal thick floor rugs.
When Oregon was a youngster, I'd open his cage and call him out. He'd follow me through the house and outside leaving the occasional little bomb behind...well peacocks leave big bombs to be honest . But no worries on a hard floor!

Oh bless him! That must be quite something being followed by a peacock! Closest I've ever been to it was when I was I little and was followed everywhere by Canada geese every time I visited a local country park. People used to laugh their socks off at 5 yr old me

I wish we had all hardwood floors again or a really big (40x60) building with AC and natural gas heat for a play house and a medical support place for chicks that need special attention.

Good morning gang and Happy Aloha Friday!!! Happy Sept 1 and us being that much closer to fall!

Spent most all day in Lihue town yesterday. DS got his eyes checked and glasses ordered ♡♡♡ plus more items off his and AJ's list. KiUC turned off electric to Koke'e because of wind warning, so was a good day to be gone. Bonus.
Officially switching over 2 stands to fund raise for Lahaina ♡♡♡ A little more footwork to do in the next week. DS is going to paint a stand for me AND, I received a text order for 15 horse bags from someone on the mainland!!! I will give them their choice on who they want to donate to.

Mountain flock has mites... so, gotta split myself in half again and treat flock and clean coop. i had just done a physical on them (3 bird check) and they were clean, but i picked up a bucket of poop that i forgot to compost and it was crawling Dont like mites... good news is I have a fire pit and all things needed to succeed for their treatment. I barely have time to glance at my chickens now-a-days . I miss my babies.

The rental I manage has a cracked trap under their sink... so I may spend my morning under their sink if plumber is not available.

So, for me, I'm super busy... too busy.

There are several of us that need to be cloned. I need two or three more of me so when my back is out another one of me can take over. The only thing is could the world handle more than one of me?
