What did you do with your flock today?

She's getting vitamin C in the B Complex with C tablets. Her neck shows no physical sign of injury. She can turn it like a contortionist at will. We can't find any evidence of an injury to the bones in the neck at all. During the day we can be working with the brooder and she struts around in the kennel as normal as can be. Look at her wrong and she puts on a contortionist show. She puts her neck down on you when you pick her up and closes her eyes. I've never heard of wry neck from the trauma like she experienced but it might be so. I thought at first they had broken her neck.
What breed is she? If she is one that has a vaulted skull she could have gotten pecked too hard and been injured. Olena didn't have very much bleeding, but was injured internally, as she had a hematoma which formed between her left eye and ear flap, and small puncture holes on the left side of her neck. Nerve and neck muscle trauma. I believe she was grabbed and dragged by the head. It's good that your girl can still walk.
The B complex I have doesn't have quite enough mg. of C so I give her a half of a C tablet more. Unused extras get flushed out.

I've got to stop hand feeding on of my big pet roosters. He is so tame and loving but doesn't know his own strength when he pecks after food you are holding for him. He missed the food and took a layer of meat out of one of my fingers this afternoon. Maybe I can do it with gloves on. He is a Cornish Rock Cross and weighs in excess of 15lbs the last time he was weighed.
Maybe just offer food in a little dish you are holding? That must've hurt!

Dang! Poor Ferdy! That is a traumatic day! Monsters, offensive new chickens in HIS house, and a scary choking incident! He and you have managed to fill a suitable amount of trauma into one day! 🥺 I’m so very glad you were able to think fast and do something! I know when Tux was going cyanotic it was really scary! Sounds like what you did was a good solution…not sure there’s a lot of good info on saving a choking chicken…like there is for choking the chicken 🤪 so happy it ended positively!! ❤️❤️
My heart just about stopped when it happened, I can tell you! I bet yours did too when Tux stopped breathing. You made a great save with your mouth to beak. It didn't even occur to me that I might try that.
One of the snippets I found online was to use the Heimlich manoeuvre! How do you perform this on a chicken???

It is possible to get hurt without any apparent reason. Yesterday afternoon I was in the kitchen just doing easy stuff, and lo and behold I feel this pop in my foot. Went to urgent care this afternoon, nothing broken, but a sprained ankle, so I have to avoid putting weight on it for awhile. That is hard to do, but at least it does not hurt to walk, only when trying to use the front if my foot for pressure necessary action, like pressing the gas pedal or removing my left shoe with my right foot.
Meanwhile on the nursing front, Olena managed to back her feet out of the sling and fall into the rear hole while I was gone. Came home to a chicken sitting on her tail, and her feet had kicked the pad away, and she had pooped, too. Had to find a new box to put her in, which is now plastic. Took a bit to adjust everything, but now she is all good. She acted like she wanted to run, and was alerting to something she had seen go by outside. We start week #7 tomorrow.
When my son comes in town next week, she will be sleeping in the pantry closet downstairs, her own private room.
Meanwhile, Alfa, my BSL has begun laying again. Now I know which chicken had been giving me eggs with sandy calcium deposits on the shell, which easily wash off.
Man, you’ve had a rough couple of days in the injury department! How is your hand doing after the electric shock? I’m so sorry you hurt your ankle too! Glad it’s just a sprain, but sometimes those take longer to heal! I know mine did 🤦🏼‍♀️

I’m so glad to hear Olena is doing alright and trying hard to heal! You might consider adding hemp hearts to her diet too, as it’s supposed to help with her types of health needs. They’re pretty tasty too! She’s so lucky to have your love and attention ❤️

Yeah, heart definitely stopped! It’s amazing how quickly the brain processes so many things in an emergency so quickly. Tux is lucky he’s my chicken in year 3 of ownership and not year 1…so much more just comes naturally now when they’re sick when before I felt totally clueless!

I wouldn’t know where to even start using the Heimlich! Seems it could be dangerous if you didn’t know how to do it properly!

This is just shocking and leaves me a bit speechless. I don't know I'd have the wherewithal to swing the lodging loose. Bravo for quick thinking and the fact that it worked. Now, about those monsters....
I honestly think I was just lucky it came loose. I'm so grateful it did. I really wish chickens had a gag reflex!
He seems to have got over the Christmas tree monster but the new house chicken is another matter. He hasn't kicked or assaulted it since the roundhouse he delivered it but he's giving it the side eye and if I pick it up while he's on my shoulder, he turns his back on it very deliberately.
Here's the offending article, It's a bit blurry as Ferdy was throwing shapes on my shoulder to show his disapproval!

Son seems to be doing better ♡ I feel really bad for him because this was due to him being a bit lax most likely, but it is what it is, everything wants to eat chickens. May have happened in one way or another no matter what. Just happened on his watch. Bet he will be a much more careful chicken tender from here on out.
Eva (6yo) has a broken wing, so she is wrapped up. The other two may just have plucks and bruises. I can not find anymore breaks though not ruling it out as I don't have an xray. I'll see how they do with settle down time.
They are eating and drinking 👍👍👍just very stressed. I have hope. Speaking of hope, Hope is one who is in iso now. Poor baby has been through so much, too much. I am hearted by their trust in me now. They know I am mom and will fix things ♡♡♡
You are the greatest mom to them and you never give them a reason to not trust you!
Poor Hope! What's wrong with her now? She's such a special girl. I hope she gets through whatever it is :hugs

A little update on the fainting pullet. She was standing with perfect posture in her kennel until ma to one step toward her and she collapsed with her neck doing all kinds of gyrations. She is having a rough time with the neuro damage from the beating she took from the pack of young hoodlum roosters like I have never seen before. Time for her nightly meds now.
Poor baby! Hopefully the vits will help. You could add vit c to her nightly meds as it's showing a lot of promise in healing nerve and tissue damage. And you could add some crushed hemp to her feed, also good for protecting the nerve sheaths from further damage? Hope she heals in time :hugs

Even though it wasn't very convenient for you that Olena did that and made a mess, it's a great sign your nursing is paying dividends, don't you think? Sounds like she certainly wants to be a 'normal' chicken again. Half the battle, I find.
I hope your sprain heals quicky. It's the worst timing with Christmas being such a busy time.
I'm a past master at injuring myself without actually doing anything, (once dislocated my knee walking downstairs) so I feel your pain :hugs

Amazing how simple things can cause an injury sometimes... especially in our feet.
Olena sounds like she's feeling lively! ❤️
