What did you do with your flock today?

Even though the feeder has enough layer pellets to last a couple of weeks, I went down and bought another bag. So the chickens are set for food until mid February.

I took a look at the grocery store loading dock and saw three banana boxes of produce scraps. Got home and sorted through them all. Celery, cilantro, citrus, radishes and rotting stuff went to the compost pile by the woods. The rest will be for the chickens to enjoy.

I chopped up some cabbage and leaf lettuce for them this morning, plus a couple of tomatoes and some green seedless grapes. After gorging, they're resting and soaking up some sunshine.

Filled up the wire feeder that's in their secure run so they have fresh stuff to pick on at all times. I started out by filling it halfway with cabbage, then a layer of apples, and topped off with curly dark green kale.
Mine love cilantro and radish tops. I grow small trays of cilantro year round for them and sprout radish seeds in winter, amongst many other seeds. They're not so keen on the actual radish itself, though

Great idea layering up different veg in their feeder!

More Biscotti... his colors slow coming in but it's coming!

Wonder if he's going to look similar to my roo Candycorn.

I cleaned the coop… completely filled the feeder and waterer bc of cold weather coming this week. Tossed out a few summer sausage scraps. Also scrambled a thin shelled egg I gathered the other day and gave that back to them with the shell, after I dried it. My big girls follow me around when I’m outside. The little girls aren’t very fond of attention.

They are! It’s so fun here! I even got to see chickens today 😍 We did the tourist stuff and went for a sleigh ride and to a reindeer farm! Snow flakes were some of the biggest I’ve ever seen! I loved it! 🥰 You should definitely come sometime!
What fun! Aria sure looks like she enjoyed the reindeer, and so glad the snow fell for you. Safe travels home!

I left my girls confined to the secure run today because I didn't feel like dealing with opening things up for them to get to the day run. I don't have auto-door. Don't even have little manual chicken doors.

I have to go into the day run with a screwdriver and remove a small plywood panel from one side of the coop, then go into the secure run and remove a panel on the other side of the coop so they can get to the day run. The coop is pretty much just their passage between runs.

I gave them a little bit of scratch and eggshells this morning, and a little more scratch mixed with sweet potato and raspberry seeds/pulp and more eggshells when I said good night to them.

Flutter, flutter, thud, scratch scratch. That's what I heard when Olena flew/jumped out of her sling box, which I had set on a chair, and landed on the floor. She proceeded to make a large poop. Saved her from it, but decided to wash her bum thoroughly, and clip her wings. Getting stronger and more feisty every week.
:celebrate

Yay!! That’s so great to hear! I’m so happy for her 😍😍😍

Also, since we are getting freezing temps in a few days, went and put the heater under the water bucket, and turned off all the water spigots and main to the garden line. Lst year I had forgotten to do that, and one of the pipes bursted. Different weather reports. Some say snow from Thursday thru Tuesday, all say frigid temps, mine says no snow, maybe a flurry, but that was yesterdays forecast. I'll know the weather when it gets here. Meanwhile, I have less eggs. Only 1 today, and more potential customers asking if I sell them. It might be August before my new ones start laying.
For any of you experienced chicken doctors and nurses: Do I continue Olena's vitamin regimen until she is back to walking normally? She now only likes fermented feed, and of course, treats. Her feet and legs are more lively, but she still has balancing issues. Starboard list and her stern doesn't stay up.
