What did you feed your chickens today?

They had a feast today, regular layer feed along with freeranging all day long. When I came home from work they got scratch , some Boss, leftover porkroast, bread and lettuce.
I had a microwave burrito and a little salad...... me thinks they eat better than me

I'm gonna start feeding my little one's soon; and I'm in the desert. So, most of their run will be dirt. I am little 'Monk-ish'---so I don't know how I feel 'bout throwing their food into ---the dirt!!!

Is that how you ladies feed scraps---or am I assuming wrong??? I am likely to serve on trays!!!

Mine had pumpkin, old hamburger buns, lettuce, carrots, raisins, cooked elbow noodles, left over salmon, sunflower seeds, baked sweet potatoes and a little scratch feed. They always have access to their laying pellets.

cjatthefarm, I'm a little like that too. I toss their scratch on the ground (though I keep a fresh bowl of it handy too -- they seem to like to "scratch"). Everything else is served in bowls or on platters. If they want to dump it on the gravel that's up to them.

Aside from their usual crumbles, scratch and BOSS, mine got shredded broccoli, cabbage, carrots, bacon and elbow macaroni. I am trying to fatten them up for winter but so far they are still pretty skinny.

Mine get their elbow macaroni raw, uncooked. They love it - must look like worms or something. If it's cooked they don't eat it as quickly.

And I used to use plates for the leftovers they'd get that would gather dirt from the run - then I saw them scratching everything off the plates into the dirt anyway! So now I don't worry about it. I may put things down on a pile of straw, but they still scatter it everywhere before eating it. Dirt must add to the flavor!

That's good to know--thank you! I have been feeding them things in the box that end up trampled with everything on the floor of their brooder ---UGH---! And that is bad enough; to not at least TRY to keep it clean would be hard for me!!

The plate of yoghurt & oatmeal that I mixed up so lovingly (!) was run thru so many times; I don't know if any was ever actually eaten!

And uncooked pasta!! I guess that would be hens older than my 4-5 week old babies. Or can their beaks do more than I think??!!

Thanks ladies for your help!

Mine ate as they do every day: starter crumbles (they're 11 weeks old), free range all day, and I made a bowl of cooked oatmeal for them which they devoured. I usually spread out some uncooked oatmeal, but decided to give them a treat. And they normally get 2 corn tortillas, which they love in small pieces (6 birds), but today I didn't get around to that. I'll owe them tomorrow

Celery and pineapple (their fave) plus pellets. They have a pumpkin they're working on too.
