What did you give your chickies today?

My chicks got worms for the first time. They were in the run as i was digging a hole for a plant. I found a worm and they went crazy over it. It was really funny to watch.

I had some leftover zipper peas at lunch. Gave them to the girls and they loved them! They pretty much only get their start/grow food and dried mealworms. (and whatever they find when we go on our outings) They are only 3 & 4 weeks old, so I don't give them too many scraps yet.

When my first chicks were young, they tried earth worms for a few days, but soon decided that they don't want to eat them.

They still love to dig through the soil when I work in the garden and they eat all the bugs, except for the earthworms.

I can only imagine why (sqirming in the stomach maybe), but they probably have a good reason to not eat them.

I gave mine seed and rice

Today my 5 or 6 week old chickens had Papaya seeds/guts and peels, it seems to be a favorite of theirs. Its cheaper than Watermelon or Canalope so its my fruit of that style of choice. So far its their favorite of all the scraps I give them. I give them meal worms every night about an hour after they come into the coops, its a large coop and I spend a few hours in there every night getting to know them. If I give them meal worms from my hand near the hanging feeder its spills out of my hand from the aggressive pecking and fighting for space to peck, then they end up scratching for remains under the feeder... this leads to them eating all the food they spilt.

My chickens love earth worms, whether its from me digging, or throwing in my daily pitch fork of earthworm compost, it seems to be the one thing they never turn down.

In the morning my girls get organic feed, organic cheerios and BOSS. After work they get greens.....they love spinach, collards and kale.
Sometimes whole grain bread with leftover stuff like tomatoes or berries. When it gets hot they love watermelon.....but we only eat american grown
produce so we have to wait awhile. I love the chicks that eat pizza....we will definetely try that.
