What did your chickens do today?

Update on Greenie:
yippiechickie.gif

That little bare spot on her head is all grown in now. This eye is the good side. The other eye is gone. This pic was several weeks ago.
This is her little pen looking from inside the regular run. We're building on to the coop on the right and also, I pressure washed it and it's now a nice wood color, not black!

It’s been awhile since I wrote about Greenie, our little green-egg layer. She is still in her own pen, but with only chicken wire between the regular run and her pen. I discarded her little jail-like pen!

She stays in this 6 x 6 area, and sometimes I take her into the big run with the rest of the chickens and, believe it or not, with Mr. Roo, who attacked her to what I thought would be her death. Now, he pretty much leaves her alone, but of course, I’m right there in the run with her. He is scared of me. All I have to do is point at him and he has a fit. I’m really not sure how he got so scared of me, but I don’t consider it a bad thing. I’m boss, not him!

Greenie, with the use of her one eye, has a few balance problems, but she is overcoming them. She doesn’t fly high like she used to and when she jumps off anything more than a few inches off the ground, she acts like she’s jumping from a great distance; takes her time, looks around, backs up, looks again, strains her neck out and looks at the ground. She just can’t judge it anymore. Her feathers grew back in nicely on her head.
I don’t think she’ll ever be able to go back to the flock and stay there by herself.

Sometimes, while we’re paying a visit, the other hens come around and might give her a peck (normal behavior) and she panics. She runs, flies to the top of the feeder (which is a great feat for her even though the top is only 2 feet off the ground). One time, she flew to my shoulder and I couldn’t get her off! So she does remember that I am her safety net.
Several times, she has pecked at the other hens as well; they, of course, do not like this one bit! Then the squabble starts. I even tried putting one of the more docile hens into her little run with her, but she didn’t like her space invaded and pecked at the intruder. Ah… what to do?
She is sleeping outside right now; in this area she calls her own, as it’s still warm here. She has her own roost and nesting box in there as well. Not sure what we’re going to do about winter. Right now her area is covered with plastic so her feed and roost stay dry.
She is not as friendly to me as she had once become, but neither is she totally afraid of me, as you can see from the note above when we’re in the big run. I’ve let her out to free-range while I’m out there and she is fairly easy to catch. When I come close, she squats and flares her wings out. She pretty much stays near me. Loves this time of freedom!

I’m glad she came out as well as she did. I am rather afraid of putting her back in with the others on her own. Not sure what Mr. Roo will do if I’m not in there. Don’t want her to be attacked again. Not sure either of us would recover!

Omg I heard Pigpen "scream" bloody murder for the first time this morning. I ran outside immediately ready to fight and there sits the neighbors cat... I was like "seriously?" Lol

My pullets did nothing, but their usual tease their owner "ME". The three are 24 weeks and still no eggs. They squat and do the egg song. They walk in and out of the nesting box. They eat and drink and roost, but no eggs. I know for sure they are all girls. Grrrrrr . . . those rascally chicken. If they keep this up much longer they will have to go to the soup pot and then I will have to start all over again.

Are you sure they're not laying somewhere else? I once stumbled upon one of my hen's 'secret nests' in pile of leaves, coconut shells and garbage. Thank God i found that nest because we were going to burn that pile. Scrambled eggs, anyone? XD

No, pile of leaves or any hiding places what so ever. I only have a small garden bed with no bushy plants to hide in and all my veggie gardens are fenced. The yard is about 98% lawn and it is kept short all the time. I wish I had hiding places so I could look and possibly have the opportunity to find a hidden nesting spot, that would have been fun.
What would have been more funnier than scrambled eggs is exploding eggs from the heat from the fire. I had one explode on me when I first used a microwave. I didn't realize the pressure builds up and I opened up the darn thing and it went kaaabooom! I really got egg on my face when that happened. I think I was only about 11 years old.

Yep, it doesn't hurt that he knows who's the boss...and it's not him!
Greenie, with the use of her one eye, has a few balance problems, but she is overcoming them. She just can’t judge it anymore. Her feathers grew back in nicely on her head. She'll get back into the swing of things as time passes. She'll figure a way around her vision issue & compensating for it will become her normal. She seems to be doing a pretty good job of it, from what you've said & I'm glad to hear of her progress.
I don’t think she’ll ever be able to go back to the flock and stay there by herself. I don't think I'd put her back in, either. Even a trial run seems like it'd set her back more than a bit, given what happened last time you tried.

So she does remember that I am her safety net. A little bit of shoulder cuddle time should be alright & get that little chicken heart back into normal rhythm. She does have quite a healthy dose of fear yet, which, given her ordeal is completely understandable.

I even tried putting one of the more docile hens into her little run with her, but she didn’t like her space invaded and pecked at the intruder. Ah… what to do? Greenie, the house chicken. Domestic Mascot. I don't know. Is there a way to section off a part of the coop just for her? Give her the security of her current space & yet keep her outside (v. in your house) when the weather turns? Or is there a way to make her temporary quarters into permanent, insulated, sheltered quarters & keep her outside & there?
She is sleeping outside right now; in this area she calls her own, as it’s still warm here. She has her own roost and nesting box in there as well. Not sure what we’re going to do about winter. Right now her area is covered with plastic so her feed and roost stay dry.
She is not as friendly to me as she had once become (all things take time to rebuild), but neither is she totally afraid of me, as you can see from the note above when we’re in the big run (and this is a good thing for you both). I’ve let her out to free-range while I’m out there and she is fairly easy to catch. When I come close, she squats and flares her wings out. She pretty much stays near me. Loves this time of freedom!

She probably does love the freedom. And the fact that it's supervised freedom means that she's safe & she knows it. That helps rebuild her bond with you, too.
I’m glad she came out as well as she did. I am rather afraid of putting her back in with the others on her own. Not sure what Mr. Roo will do if I’m not in there. Don’t want her to be attacked again. Not sure either of us would recover! Well, I think you're right that she'd not fare so well in with the others. It may be from any of the others, not just that saucy Roo. If some normal pecking and squawking sends her into a panic while you're in with her, I imagine that she'd not do well at all when you're not around to intervene. I dunno, I vote for house chicken then maybe in Spring get her a couple of fertilized eggs to sit on & hatch just so that she has friends. You said that she wasn't very warm toward the one docile girl you tried to put in with her before, so maybe she'd feel differently if the company was "hers". Maybe someone else has a suggestion? Regardless, I'm glad to hear that she's pulled through & has healed as well as she has to date. That is very good news. Thanks for updating us.

Quote: Today, as we were working on the new coop, hubby mentioned . . . what to do with Greenie . . .
idunno.gif
. . . so he decided to section off a portion of what I thought was going to be a sheltered part of the run, into a separate living quarters for her! And make a little "outside" area as well. This will be in the same spot as she now is, only it will be enclosed. Part of the roof went on today! There will be access into her run from the outside and maybe access from inside the regular run as well as a door into her little enclosed coop! Wow! I really didn't expect him to suggest all that!
yesss.gif
So Greenie seems to officially be a "pet" chicken and will get special treatment.

She was out free all day again today and stayed close by all day. I gave them all some table scraps and egg shells and gave her a good sized portion of it all in a bowl. First thing she does is dump it all over! Then she wandered away. I shook the bowl and here she comes running! So she ate EVERYTHING (pig, not chicken!!) and pecked at the bowl for almost an hour. Hubby and she were competing for the loudest hammering sound!
wink.png
Him on the roof with nails and she with the bowl. She was quite entertaining
pop.gif
and went to roost with a FULL belly!

One more good thing today: The coop is a distance from the house and she stayed out there, but one time I went up to the house and she ran after me. Then half way there, I forgot something, went back to the coop, and she followed me again! Made me kinda happy!
big_smile.png

As far as letting her set on some eggs, none of our chickens have ever acted like they would like to. They lay their egg and leave right away - yesterday I watched while one laid her egg, and she left while it was still wet. I think they all do that. They don't make much fuss (egg song) about them either.

How do you tell if the egg is fertile or not? Do you just assume because the rooster is in with them?

Gotta love those chickens!!!!
