What did your chickens do today?

I was working in the garden for a bit today so I let a few select chicks free range... They weren't interested lol. They have a huge coop and a large fenced area so they all feel very safe inside. Every chick looked around for a moment or two and then ran back to the gate to be let inside with the other chicks. The last one walked the fence line and was acting pretty sure of himself but he ran through the gate the moment he had a chance.

Today, the rooster I've had my eyes on keeping took a stroll to the lake with me under my arm. I now have at least 10 roosters in my 25 chicken flock (all under 3 mo. old). So, the guy that I'm thinking about keeping is going to start getting treatment early to make him a gentle rooster. He's already one of the nicest of the group, but he gave me quite the glare when I picked him up (which is always a little terrifying..even if they ARE just chickens...

) and the walk was a sure thing when he rose his hackles at me in my arms.

Plus I just got back inside from feeding them all a couple earthworms. I fed the big flock 2 and my little 4 week old chicks a few. It was soooo funny watching them chase each other around.

I've never seen them move so fast! And they played tug of war with them just like dogs. Haha. I didn't even cut the big worms up because I knew they were just going to rip them apart.

Ahh...the life. (I'm pathetic).

That's cute :) I had a sealed package of meal worms and my chicks found it, opened it and started eating them up. I guess I keep underestimating them lol

I got 5 buff orpington chicks yesterday! They are too precious! Only 2 days old!! One of the fell asleep with his legs sticking out behind him! One of them charged me and bit my fingers when I put my hand in the brooder to teach them where the water and food is.

That's so funny! I have Ten 2-week-old Buff Orphs they're feisty little things as well. I went out to clean their brooder yesterday and one of them had managed to get on top of the water jar. I'm assuming she was checking things out. I've just started taking the top off the brooder during the day and leaving the light on. As I was pulling chicks out of the brooder and putting them in their temporary bed so I could clean, I always count them and make sure I have everybody. I had seven in my small box and two left in the brooder. I thought, wait, something isn't right here. Where's my other chick. So I got the last two chicks out and pulled the brooder out of the cage and my lost little chick had got out of the brooder sometime after feeding yesterday morning! She was wondering around the pen like she owned the place!!

Previously posted this in a different thread, but would definitely fit better in this thread...

Today as I was cleaning out the chick's crate, (They're in a large, LARGE dog crate until they are ready to be moved out to the coop...) the chicks were sure showing their appreciation in chick language. Lol As I was removing items from the cage, they were jumping up and perching on my arm. Haha, guess that's their way of saying, "we trust you". :) Made me feel good since almost 4 weeks ago, when I got them, they would always run from me. Now they perch on my arm or even jump into my lap.

Happy chicks!

Today, since the temps got up to 90 degrees and it's suppose to continue, my flock of youngins got a "pool" - as you can see they were fascinated at first.

They also enjoyed eating (as well as wearing) some cherry yogurt. My sweetest and most friendly little lady, Foghorn, preferred to photobomb the pic with her yogurt beak, lol.

This lucky little lady got presented with the opportunity to poop on two mens' heads at once, I told her she was foolish to let it pass by without doing it

This one taught me not to ignore what they're doing on my back/shoulder while I'm hanging out them, she slipped her beak behind my glasses and pecked me in the eye! I guess my eye lashes were just too tempting for her.

Our two cockerels, Shetan on the left/Zorro on the right, took a hot day, lazy rest together with their favorite pullets. I hope they always get along this well! I'd like to find a home for Zorro though and just keep Shetan.
