What did your chickens do today?

Another thing my chickens did today - this morning, on my way out to the coop, I've never heard such a squawking and carrying-on before. I figured they were all mad because I wasn't out there at the crack of dawn - I was 3 cracks late.

Anyway, I also thought maybe there's a fox in the henhouse, so I rushed out there. No fox or other enemy - just a bunch of anxious and impatient chickens! Sounded like they all laid an egg at the same time and were REALLY celebrating . . . not kidding . . . it was that loud.

So I watched them for awhile - Ms. Poopy walking around like she had on a new hat. (see previous post where she got it at . . . ) The others scrambling around trying to get the first bite of food. They were all squawking and picking on each other, really being mean to each other, still making a racket and did this for about 10 minutes. A bunch of misbehaved and mischievous children!

All of a sudden, Mr. Roo made a sound I'd never heard before. Almost sounded like a GROWL... and EVERY chicken in the bunch headed to the coop all at once. Never seen the likes of it! They didn't go inside, but just by the door - and FAST. So they were all kind of huddled behind me since that was where I was standing. I looked around the woods to the west, the field to the north, the sky and didn't see anything at all.

After a short time, they all went about their chicken business as usual, but were somewhat calmed down.

Now I am wondering if Mr. Roo had had enough of their squabbling and fighting and decided to put an end to it?
If so, way to go, Roo!!

My daughter had a sleepover with four girls and they are now outside running through the sprinklers with the two chickens chasing them!

My chickens decided it was a good day to have a nice shower in the rain! Usually they go right inside when it rains, but today they were (and still are) enjoying a light afternoon\evening rain!

And my 5 week old chicks learned how to go in and out of their little house in their pen for during the day!

Hi chicklover3990,

I've been reading that if you have more than one rooster, they are likely to fight with each other and may even kill each other, but I think it's a matter of how much space you have and if you can separate the flocks because surely there are farms out there with more than just one rooster. Especially since there's a 50% chance any egg is going to hatch into a rooster.
Yes, of course there are farms with more than 2 rooster, even like 5 roosters in the same area. There is always a top rooster, then you have the other roosters who are in charge of their own little harem, which could even include another rooster ( probably not fully grown ) and this social structure works.....depending on how much SPACE you have.
Also if you are to keep multiple rooster in one enclosure with hens then no corners are advised, try to eliminate areas where a dominant rooster can trap another one.
You can keep many roosters together, called a rooster pad. But as soon as you add hens, that is when the trouble occurs. I am not sure how far away you have to keep the hens from a rooster pad to keep things moving smoothly.

They drank from the "water fountain", yanked a million times on my camera string thing you put over your wrist, got their coop and run cleaned out and got their first treat ball dispenser with a new to them type of seed mix treats. They also got a real tree branch to roost on in their run, their little board in the concrete blocks just wasn't working for them anymore. Shetan, our young rooster, had his head in the corner with his back to the run when one of my silver laced wyandottes flew right into his rear end and he let out the loudest HONK! Shetan is "coming into" his voice, he tried his first crow yesterday... scared the ever living daylights out of himself and all the others, lol. They scrambled and flew to hiding spots, Shetan's feet were scrambling before he was even done with his crow attempt heehee.

Here's what they did

Today was the first full day my chicks spent outside and in the new coop. I spent at least 8 hours out there with them and was repaid with a lot of affection. I came inside earlier to make dinner and relax and I went back outside to find one of my roos guarding the area outside the coop. He was keeping the other birds nearby and seems to have a partner in crime hen that sticks by his side. When I got inside the gate and spoke all the chicks ran out of the coop to see me. It's hard to not find them all cute when they do things like that.
