I thought I'd start a thread about catching a predator. Many people have issues with predators sooner or later. I know I have had my share over the years. I don't have so much of an issue any more but I have taken protective measures with each. The first thing was I made my pens larger and stopped free ranging but my property is mostly open pasture. Next due to predation from aerial predators, I covered all of the pens with good heavy duty netting. Next I had a fox dig under one of the pen gates. It killed several birds and dragged them out into the pasture after it had killed one then went back under the gate and killed another and dragged it out under the gate which it did several times before I caught it. I then put concrete under all of the gates. I have had losses since but very rare. Usually due to a failure in some respect which as soon as it is discovered is rectified.
Another concern many people address is about trapping predators and what to do with them after they have been captured. In the past I have used leg traps but due to the increase of people buying land and moving into our area I see more cats and dogs roaming around so now I only use live traps, then if I inadvertently catch a dog or cat I can release it. I have caught several predators and have eliminated them. For any critter that is legally protected I contact a wildlife rescue who will come and get them but I'm sure that would also work for any that aren't legally able to eliminate (shoot) in their area or who can't or don't want to. I'm curious as to other possible ways. Good luck to everyone.
