I have a delima-
My first broody hen hatched only two eggs. And a few days ago the chick's sibling mysteriously went missing...
So now it's momma and one baby.
But at five weeks old, momma is ready for baby to move on, but the baby has no one else it can cling to since sibling is gone.
I can put the chick in a large dog crate during the day but it yells and yells all day long. If I put its mom in there it'll settle but the mom wants out n paces all day....
Do I just make the chick get over bring alone or force the mom to be by the chick till the chick is grown???
I can't just have the chick run with the flock as they are free range and we have hawks (may be what has taken the sibling).
What do I do? Any suggestion are welcome.

Mine run with the flock but I have lots of hiding places in the garden (like pallets to hide under). If you are going to keep it by itself it will be miserable. I'd make a little fenced area for them if it were me- like a playpen with food and water. So mama can scratch the ground a bit- put some netting overhead and voila! You can put the dog crate in there too to give them a little shelter from sun and rain. This won't be predator proof of course, but maybe better than free ranging.

Yea. I don't want it alone...
I could get it a friend of similar age. Or just make the mom stay with it in a bigger area.. It's just sad to watch the baby try to make a connection with its mom or other hens and get turned away everywhere.
It's nature, but still rough.
