Help!! I have some Silkies that are 10 weeks old and some other chicks that are 7 weeks. And I noticed that each one has these weird mites crawling all over their skin!! And a lot of them too! The Silkies have the most. I have no clue what they are though. They are yellowish in color. I've never had problems with mites. So, what can I use to free them of these nasty things? Seven dust? Thanks in advance!

I used Dri-Kill and it was a one time dose... but please wear a mask if you use this product.. I used it and within days had pneumonia in my right lung, it was full, and it had started to move to my left

I have heard that DE will treat mites too but i dont know how effective it is

DE won't get rid of a mite infestation. It is only used as a preventative.

Purchase Sevin liquid, a pump pressure sprayer or a large spray bottle and poultry dust. Do this ASAP because mites can kill chickens especially smaller ones in no time at all.

Remove the chickens from the coop.
Take food and water containers and anything else in the coop out.
Open all windows and doors
Shovel out all bedding
With a broom sweep the ceiling, walls and then finally floor. Sweep the roost also if it is fixed in place.
Make a strong solution of Sevin liquid with water and spray every crack, crevice and corner. Spray the roost if it is wood. Spray where the floor meets the walls and down the corners of the walls.
Let dry
Using the poultry dust or Sevin dust (I prefer Sevin dust) sprinkle it on the floor close to the walls and out about 5 inches. Sprinkle it on nest boxes and again on the roosts
Wait at least 1/2 hour and add FRESH bedding and move everything back in
Starting at the chickens head, use the poultry dust to dust the chickens. Put the dust in a piece of old panty hose and tie the end. Use the panty hose like a powder puff to dust the chickens. Make sure to pay special attention to their tummies, under wings and vent area. Don't forget the legs.

Redust the chickens in 7 days and again in another 7 days. You have to kill the mites that are waiting to hatch. The dust will not kill eggs.

If the infestation is bad treat the chickens for anemia.

You said they're yellowish. Those are lice. They're chicken lice, they won't live on you. Good thing you live in Florida. Go to HD or Lowe's and get Sevin powder, 5%, I think, and powder your chickens. Powder everything, like sprinkle in the shavings. Sevin is for dusting veggies, it's in the garden section. It's cheap and it works great. I dust mine at night. I use an old parmesan cheese shaker, or my hand (not supposed to), sprinkle it from their neck to their tail, and fluff it in. I also take a bit and fluff it into their butt.
With 7-10 week olds, I would not dust them heavy , but mix it into the shavings real good. Every time I change the silkie coop shavings, I sprinkle some on the shavings and mix it in. I think lice love silkies.
Mites are tiny black or red things, real tiny.
