The APA recognizes the feathered shank and outside toe. This is what people used to refer to as the "French Marans". Occaisionally, the clean legged birds show up even when breeding properly feathered bird together. The Marans cock/cockerel should have a full, and open tail, lacking the tall sickle feathers. A "long flowing tail" is not appropriate for the breed.Foot feathering depends on whether bred to English or French standard. I'm not certain which variation made it into the APA standard, but *think* it is clean-legged. I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong on that.
