What do people think about hybrid or mixed breed chickens ?

Well, I know I'm probably no good at it. But my son would love this !

I think in the first one (definitely some Ameraucana because of the pea comb and cute muff and beard). There is some kind of feather foot breed. I don't know what. (I'm not the chicken expert, my son is)

In the second picture, I can tell there is some kind of Ameraucana cross with the one on the right. Have no idea of those 2 on the left.

In the 3rd picture, some kind of Ameraucana cross again, but with clean legs.

That's all I can tell you.

That was really fun ! We really should start a thread: Guess that Hybrid !

I had fun. I can't wait to show my son on Sunday.

Please post more !!

We have the "What Breed/Gender is my bird?" forum for that

My opinions is really based on previous experience with purebred dogs et cetera. I love mutts (except silkie muts... ew!) and like playing around with genetics (blue eggs, muffs et cetera) however my silkie line has always been pure and showable, also maybe because I don't really see any traits in them I'd like in my hybrid flock LOL

Okay, so this thread is kinda confusing, I'll just say my bits -

There's nothing wrong with hybrids and mutts, even a purebred breeder like myself make mutts all the time. In fact, the creation of a new color in a breed often is through making mutts. The creation of breeds or good layers or meat birds is through making mutts and/or hybrids. One of my top five favorite roosters of all time I've had is a hybrid. (Tolbunt Polish x Black Copper Marans; complete accident)

However, when it comes to shows or breeding, I think there are some issues that sadly will probably never get cleaned up but desperately need to. Like the Ameraucana vs Easter Egger issue. There's actually still a lot of people showing, selling, and "informing" to others all the wrong stuff on this issue, and of course, all having to do with showing, selling, or simply owning an Easter Egger and calling it something else. Or saying it is the same as an Ameraucana, making Ameraucanas mutts.

Don't get me wrong, I love Easter Eggers, make my own "homemade recipes" all the time, but I have a big issue with how their false marketing is bringing down the true breed blue egg layers out there and thus also bringing down factual information on poultry.

Thanks.

He has no name at the moment, but I like to nickname him the "French Meatball"

He's absolutely huge, bigger than both his parents, whom are both French yet completely unrelated, and he's just beautiful.

Thanks, I'll have to check it out ! Is it like a photo gallery game show ?

That's what I was looking for.

Kind of like flash cards for my son to play and guess.
