What do people think about hybrid or mixed breed chickens ?

Thanks for your pic of your hybrid rooster. I think he's very unique ! Maybe you should come up with a name that more suits his looks. Somehow, French Meatball, when hearing that name would never have led me to him.

Maybe that's a new game we should create on here: Match the name with the Chicken. Let me guess, there's already a thread for that ?

I beat French Meatball would win because nobody would ever match him up to the pic.

I'm not sure what those two breeds would look like normally (as purebreds). I'll have to research it. Unless you have pics of both ? That would make it easier !

Thanks.

I like them. I go for the biggest bird regardless of breed. Ive got a couple 15 pound cross roosters around here.

I actually really like them. My 2 Hamburg/Booted Bantam mixes are among the sweetest birds in my flock, and lay almost every day!

Tolbunt Polish are gold laced Polish with mottling. My hybrid rooster is a gold laced because mottling is recessive, and because the Black Copper has the same e locus gene that my Tolbunt does, thus, the lacing carries on pretty well.

Well, I know I'm probably no good at it. But my son would love this !

I think in the first one (definitely some Ameraucana because of the pea comb and cute muff and beard). There is some kind of feather foot breed. I don't know what. (I'm not the chicken expert, my son is)

In the second picture, I can tell there is some kind of Ameraucana cross with the one on the right. Have no idea of those 2 on the left.

In the 3rd picture, some kind of Ameraucana cross again, but with clean legs.

That's all I can tell you.

That was really fun ! We really should start a thread: Guess that Hybrid !

I had fun. I can't wait to show my son on Sunday.

Please post more !!

Yep, all these birds have pure Ameraucana as one parent.
The first roo is 1/2 Standard Cochin out of a hen like this:

1 and 2 in the second picture and the hen in the third are half Wellsummer. I just loved the hen in the bottom pic so I made some more

#3 in the second picture is probably pretty tough to guess. She has an Iowa Blue sire, which is the breed I am working on. I have a lot of purebred chicks growing up now, but I love the Ameraucana crosses too!

Thanks, I'll have to check it out ! Is it like a photo gallery game show ?

That's what I was looking for.

Kind of like flash cards for my son to play and guess.

The problem with that section is the people who post don't know the answer

Wow ! Monster Roosters !

What are the biggest chickens ? Those Jersey Giants ? Do you mix with that breed ?

I bet the biggest rooster is "king of the pen ?"

And I thought our Maran was the biggest one we've ever seen !

We love going to shows to see all the chickens. It's nice to see them up close and personal than just pics on the internet or those funny artist renditions in the standard. I still can't get over how they don't use real pics...yeah, yeah, yeah...I know....there is no perfect chicken with all the perfect traits of that breed.

It's still strange to me.

Thanks for your pics ! I can't guess what they are (the parents). I'll have to wait to have my son look.

I started a new thread for pics.

I'm hoping it will be all pics and people can play like the flash card game (look at each pic and guess). I guess I should keep my thoughts silent to not ruin it for others. Maybe I should PM my results.

Thanks !

Dear Illia,

Ah.....very interesting ! I thought he looked kind of like a maran, but with a beard ! And that golden lacing. I really like your Tolbunt Polish ! I love any chicken that "wears a hat."

Thanks !
