What do we tell the neighbors?

I would call the police station and ask them what to do about the other dogs. In most places, not providing veterinary care is a crime. The dogs are obviously suffering.

Dogs are considered personal property, so while you did the morally right thing, it was against the law. I would tell them you found the dog dead in your pond. And maybe take the opportunity to bring up the condition of the other animals and offer to put them down for him if it was too difficult for them.

The county sheriff office is who you call for animal cruelty or neglect. If they find it as bad as you say they will give notice for them to comly and to fix or address the situation.
And SSS on that poor suffering dog,he did what was best for the dog.

The sick dog crawled to your property to die, you found it and buried it for them.

We don't have animal control, either, but the sheriff's office is who you would report animal cruelty/neglect to. I think you need to make that call.

BTW, thank your husband for putting it out of it's obvious misery on our behalf.

Glad your DH ended the poor dogs suffering. But I dont think I would tell the neighbors you found him dead on your property. If hubs shot the dog, they may question why a dog with a fatal gun shot made its way onto your property. They may just go ahead and blame you. And if you tell them that you guys buried it, they may want the body back. Gross, yes, but some people are like that.

Why tell? There is absolutely no point in telling. It will not change their ways, and will probably create a NFH situation if you do.As sick as they were all they will hear is you shot them. I might have put them down myself.Sounds like they were suffering.

What ever the reasoning, you would come out of this as the bad guy so I have to agree with the others and say that you should lie.

it sickens me that people can treat their animals with such disregard and the money reason doesnt wash with me.. if they cant afford to care for them then they shouldnt have them in the first place!

I can attest to this. there are several places in rural Alabama that has no animal control or humane society. some pounds will take the animals but they are often quite a dive away.

I agree as well. It sounds like your hubby did that poor pup a HUGE favor. It obviously knew who to go to in order to go peacefully. Thank you for treating that dog so well. If it wanted to die at home with it's "family" then it would have found a place there. But it knew your's was the safer place to be. I would tell them you saw it limping towards the woods or something or just do what the others said: SSS. I'm glad we have people like you and your hubby around to at least try to advocate for the animals. Someone has to.
