What’s a saltie??? Sharks???
While it is utterly horrifying to think about sharks in freshwater rivers and it does happen in Australia...

The term Saltie is frequently used by Australians to differentiate between the two native crocodiles or "croc" species; freshwater and saltwater. These are often called "freshies" and "salties."

So making up words to mean things that already have a proper name isn't an issue for you as long as it's the right group of people doing it?
But when backwater hillbillies do it it rubs you the wrong way?
just trying to understand.
No, what rubs me the wrong way is when there is a perfectly good word, like crop, that for literally no reason other than people are too busy making sure they mentally live like someone from Little House on the Prairie, decided to make the word craw. It is still four letters. And changing it serves no purpose. Saltwater crocodile being shortened to "salties" however does cut down on time both verbally and written, when carrying on a conversation in a non-educational format. :)
