What do you chickens mean to you?

They are many things to me.

Education - I have be in continuous "learning" mode to raise them right. Plus, I love being able to use them to teach my granddaughter more about life.

Relaxation - Something about watching thelittle idiots run around provides hours of amusement ("Chicken TV").

Food - Of course.

Pride - In raising them well, and providing a safe, healthy environment for them.

Probably a lot of other stuff, but my brain isn't working well after not getting any sleep last night.

My RIR flock was a physical connection to the past. My grandfather started the flock in 1942 to help get his family through the war. Every time I looked at them I thought about him. They were a thread of continuity through my own life. When thieves stole them on Thanksgiving morning, I felt like they snapped that connection to my past and I don't think I will ever get over that. I still have a small flock of buff rocks, but it is just not the same thing at all.

mine are just delightfull.. they give the kids fun stuff to do in "my" backyard after school.. keeping them from roaming the neighborhood.. I just love how the big chickens run up like one of those lopsided toys.. I just cant get over how they all run

They are the best pets... and they give me eggs.. and I too give them all my table scraps.!

entertainment and love.
Honestly the eggs are great. I love knowing that they are fresh. But those have become so secondary to me. My girls are pets. Companion animals same as my dog, cats, rabbits and even my horse.
They dont "cluck" They sing. They all have unique personalities that have shown since we got them as day olds(and one at a bit older)
They have been a joy to have in the family.

We were talking to our 6 year old daughter about how we have a "small family" compared to some of her friends. We only have one child. Medical and personal choice. She said "No. We have a big family. We have the boys(our twin cats) Sabrina(or older cat) the rabbits(3) Connor(dog) Rhett(horse) and the girls(our little flock)"
Dad and I stand corrected.

Considering that I always have felt this way to my animals and ALL animals in general. It was nice to learn that my daughter does as well.

In one word, relaxation.

I can come home from an utterly horrible day at work or go outside when chaos hits in the house, sit down and watch the birds and can literally feel my stress melt away.

My little flock means everything to me. My DH and I for the past three years have been having a hard time both financially and emotionaly due to his severe health problems. I work two jobs (really long hours) and still have all the household things to do once I get home since DH is unable to. But three days a week for a couple hours I get to sit and play with my chickens. They help relieve my stress and make me laugh. My DH even sits and feeds them honeysuckle leaves and it helps him too. God knew what he was doing when he made chickens.
