What do you do for a living? Anyone work w/animals for a job???

I'm a stay at home mom, one year short of a Journalism degree, just keeping my student loans out of default. Because I don't like being told what to write, I'm thinking about switching to political science to pursue a Juris Doctor. Except, the economy sucks and it's 90 miles one way to the only law school in the state. I can't afford the gas to get there, let alone home, so I'm thinking about getting a paralegal degree at the technical college, only 26 miles from here. In the interim, I've started growing blackberries, blueberries, plum and nectarine trees. I've started raising chickens, bought a pygmy goat and 11 goslings. We've tilled the land and planted a huge garden, built a greenhouse, bought a pressure canner, are sinking a well, and are well on our way to a self-sustaining homestead. Maybe, with any luck, I can start a small scale produce and poultry business on our land.

When I worked for Dekalb Swine, had to shower in AM to get in and got to shower out to try and remove some of the stench afterwards.

So how do you like DRY SKIN from so many showers???

I haven't showered in since last year! LOL...everytime I go out to a farm the managers are like "Wanna go in?" Yeah right - you should have seen my HAIR! LOL...And we had to go to that barn first thing because of the biosecurity pyramid. Man I looked like crap all day and don't even get me STARTED on what they made me wear! Coveralls that were like 10 inches too long and boots that were 5 sizes too big. And there were mice in the "dressing room".

Now you tell me how any decent woman can wear used underwear?? Seriously - I had to go commando.

Better than coveralls 3" too short and boots w/holes in them. When I was in service to farmers, I might have to shower as many as 6X/day.

ALL underwear is used after first time.......LOL

I've worked in a number of animal jobs and non-animal jobs along the way. Right now I am self-employed. We take a vendor booth to dog shows and sell shirts and other items with doggy designs, as well as, other breed specific dog stuff (signs, flags, keytags, etc). We also have two websites.

My job right before this was an inspector for the American Kennel Club. It was an interesting five years!

Now we are refocusing and trying to make our little 50 acre farm more productive so we can stay home with the critters more.

I do odd jobs and sometimes temporary assignments now and some part time classes. A regular everyday job was always so boring. Computer repair/building, yard cleaning, grass cutting, painting houses, selling things online, selling/making crafts at the Renaissance Festivals during the spring/summer, pet sitting, people sitting, Tire builder, Wiccan/Pagan shop sales. Perks are making money doing new thngs and it doesn't seem like work.

The most I did as far as working with animals was managing a pet store for a two years. The funniest experience was seeing some crackhead lady come in and try to buy a beta tank to put a huge oscar into. The fish was larger than than the tank!
