What do you do for food? At night?

I use a gravity feeder made from pvc. Cap it at night, but there's food and water in the coop always. We had a rat but it was interested in the eggs more than feed.

For fun I have had a light running all night that attracts night-flying insects. Chicks in particular will stay up much of the night catching the bounty. I am slowly trying to find what light colors work better here. It is becoming clear that best on one night may not be best on another. Also insects have preferences.

At night I take my feeder out of the coop and put it in a metal trashcan. This encourages them to pick up any scratched out bits in the morning as well as protects the feed from any rodent interest. Don't currently have a rodent problem, and don't want to start having one again.

Obviously if I was on vacation (what's that?) I would just leave the feeder in.
