What do you do when your cull attempt fails..

Good luck, and yes I so agree! The leader of the flock passed and she was loved by many... Including the family, not sure I have ever seen a chicken able to make so many memories... She walked into a really tall bush, and started talking "Coco coco cocococo" etc... Hence her name... "Coco" like the sound a chicken might make. She made the cutest faces on camera, very photogenic, and was loved by Chocolate her "Sister from a diffrent mother." Rest in peace to both of them. We just lost her the 24th of July.

Right is chocolate, left is Coco. You can see just how sick she looks.
Aww, sorry you lost her too. They were obviously besties.
Yeah the down tail, very very sick, that was the first thing I noticed with Britney, her tail was lower than usual. So I checked her over an noticed vent gleet, these 2 never had it before, it was when her poop went banana skin yellow I knew she was really sick.. the rest you know.

I locked penny in an hour ago, (6.46pm Sun now) and she was so sad she was trying to get Brit to move so she could curl up behind her. I gave her a big cuddle an made her watch me put a bin over Brit to stop the rats going for her. Then put penny in their (cat carry box) actual nest with sun warmed dry grass clippings. She stayed long enough for me to close everything up and close rhodey in his, then I heard her trying to lift the cover on her sister. Poor girl. I'll bring her out to see my young girls tomorrow for an hour or so.

I'm considering putting my 7 wk old with her.. if she accepts Bubba then I'll keep them together unless she sells first. She's too young to be in with her sisters, they'll attack her. She had half hour with her mumma in the sun for the first time this arvo, it ended when she bit mumma back toe lol

While this may not what you want to hear, the quickest way to euthanize a chicken is to place their head underneath a broomstick or pole of some type, press down on the stick with your foot, and pull up with their legs. It does not remove their head, rather it severs their head from their vertebrate, ending their life quickly. I am afraid most others ways can cause pain unless you go to a vet. While it sounds gruesome, there is usually no blood involved. Their body will move around as their nerves stimulate their body, but they are dead.
Hi, yeah I know the method, it's just not me. I have shot sick animals in the past, like a cat that was rat poisoned sick, dragging it's back end, my landlord tried all sorts of ways but it just wouldn't die. Broken neck and all, so I took our neighbours gun an shot it. That poor wee boy is probably the reason I won't cut their necks or broom them. I'm capable, but I'd rather not have it half dead.

After my failed attempt, from not having the chamber sealed properly, as you can see by the conversations through the thread, she tried to pull through, in the end just slipped away quietly. She had loads of attention, cuddles and comfort, her literal end was peaceful :)

They're Starbright.
Today I let penny out in the big run, she hasn't moved from the spot they sunbathed in all day. 6 hrs so far. I'll go give her some sunflower seeds shortly while the dogs are still sleeping.

My ones mumma is a hy-line. The Starbright stop laying to moult and rest over winter where the hy-line don't. Both breeds are cousins starting from the brown shavers and similar other breeds. The generally throw brown chicks. Pretty much a glorified shaver. All my chicks are from rhodey an Jess, he's a RIR/shaver cross an she's a tiny little hy-line:) the girls grow way bigger than her and I'm getting a range of different colors. Including pure white, and white with gold edged feathers. Even the boys are the same. The first boy was pure white and developed gold chest and undercarriage with gold edged feathers on his saddle.
I sold him at 12wks, he's Stunning!!

Oh wow! I feel so bad for Britts bff!
I buried Britney today. Penny watched me dig a huge hole, then I bought Brit out an left her in the nest a few minutes for penny to realise something's happening.
She tried to wake her and stood guard over her.
I let her have her way while I gave the dogs their bikkies. Penny was still standing guard but not over her this time.
She watched everything I did, picking Brit up to place in the hole. I left her another couple minutes so penny could see she wasn't about to climb out.
What surprised me was as I placed the dry grass from their nest around Brit, penny crouched beside me so I gave her a cuddle while I covered her with the rest of the grass. Then scooped the dirt by hand so she could see her being covered. Penny didn't walk away until I put all the dirt over her sister.

She's been out in the run, she's had sunflower seeds, a little bit of her mash, talked to the young ones, now she's sitting quietly in their favourite corner. Probably crying her little heart out that her sister isn't with her.

Oh my gosh, that brought tears to my eyes... Chickens have as many feelings as humans and its so sad to see her mourning her loss... Penny has such a good heart, time will heal, hopefully soon for lil penny 💗. Im sure Brit is still with her, although not in sight, she is walking with her. ❤️❤️❤️ Is Penny the only one mourning? Or is the rest of the flock following suit?

Only penny, they had only been in with Goldie an Mira occasionally, an that was by accident lol
Penny an Britney were completely inseparable after their other sister died earlier in the year.
