What do you do with extra chicks?

It seems to be the only thing to do and most roosters are doomed to die early as it is and feed is so expensive. I culled a renegade evil pullet that was a born cannibal and I honestly have no regrets. It is the actual doing it I have a hard time with.

I have several friends and relatives who take any of the chicks I want to get rid of. I am new to incubating so before I buy any eggs I want to do some test hatches with free eggs and I am giving away the results.

I'm planning on getting some Light Sussex pullets and a RIR roo so I can hatch out my own sex-link chicks.
But I'm not sure yet if I'd be able to kill a day old fluffybutt. They put so much effort into hatching, it just doesn't seem fair...

A couple people asked if I process them first. No, just do a cervical dislocation and toss them to the dogs. Even in older, feathered chicks. The dogs do their own processing. I am certain they could disassemble a full grown bird if I let them. They are toy and mini sized poodles, and a couple pugs.

THese males can be a good eating bird; use a heritage type RIR rather than a production type RIR. Sussex are supposed to put on a large carcass and, as I understand it, used to be a good eating bird. Just a thought.

never.. the only birds I cull as chicks are ones with defects.. which I only get in hatchery birds or shipped eggs
baby cockerels become big cockerels.. then get to go to Camp Kenmore

i also never get discouraged when I order straight run chicks and end up with a bunch of roos.. they all have a use here.. heck.. sometimes I even order roosters from the hatchery when I don't have enough hatch out from my eggs

Do you have bantams? They are so small I can not imagine eating one.

Just butchered two bantams yesterday (cochin roos).. the largest weighed out at 12 ounces.. the smaller was 11.. bigger than quail and taste good on the grill wrapped with bacon and stuffed with cream cheese!
