What do you do with the innards?

We've been wanting to do some DP or meat birds in the coming months and are researching it thoroughly before we even get started (getting all our chicks in a row, so to speak LOL). We've found great info on here and on YouTube and in books. However, the one thing I haven't seen is... what do you do with the entrails, head, feet, and parts you throw away??

I mean, do you just wrap the yuckies in plastic and put it in the trash or what?

Yep, that's what I do. Wrap them in some paper or plastic that's going in the garbage anyhow, and throw them in with the regular weekly pickup.

However - I do keep the edible giblets - heart, gizzard, liver, etc - and the feet, and make stock out of them. And the feathers and the blood go into the compost pile.

I've seen other people who bury them. And other people who take them deep into the woods and leave them for predators.

Whatever I don't want the dog to get, I just put in a heavy garbage bag and then into the trash with the feathers etc. If it's hot and not going to be garbage day soon, I put the garbage bag in the big freezer. Check your regulations though

The feathers make up the bulk of the unused parts.

Whatever the dog can have, well, she gets

Recycle back to the chicken yard and compost for the garden. I always cut open the gizzard to see what pretty rocks have been polished this time.

While processing chickens I have a small fire pit I keep a nice hot little fire going in. I burn feathers, and everything else I do not want to eat. Bones burn too so no worries about pets getting cooked bones.

do a search for Frugals thread on making chicken stock, he uses the head and feet for that. Plus it's just a great thread to read.

Toss them in the burn barrel.

The head goes into the woods, and the rest goes in the chicken pen. Any bones left after the chickens have had a day to munch gets picked up and tossed into the woods. Keeping the bones in the pen for more than a couple days seems to attract buzzards.
