What do you do with your dead (chickens, ducks, quail, etc...)

Only if freshly killed by a predator and not too badly mangled.

*Send it to the lab?
Some go to the lab, some I necropsy.

*Throw them in the trash?
Sometimes. Triple bagged of course.

*Make dog food?
No

*Bury them?
All special ones get a proper burial with flowers and some words.

*Burn them?
No, but I've thought about it.

*Compost them?
No.

*Throw them over the hedge into the neighbors yard?
Do mice and rats count?

Mice, rats, and chicks I place out in the middle of the yard and the crows eat them.

My husband wraps them in a towel and buried them. He puts them in a towel so he doesn't throw dirt in their face. I am a softie but he is just as big of one.

I haven't eaten any that died. Thought about dog food for some that I opened up and figured out what they died of, but haven't so far.
after 4 generations raising horses, cows, dogs and now a few chickens here.. THERE IS NO PLACE EMPTY to bury a cat even.. I keep finding bones where ever I dig so I gave up 20 years ago and it goes in the trash if it will fit... did you know you can fit a newborn foal in a garbage can in one piece.. just fold them up like in mama. Have to be newly deceased though.

Cremation is an interesting idea. I wonder if I could get my kids on board with that?

I like the idea too, but worry so much about starting a fire with all of the wind and dry grass.

Mine go to the pet graveyard at the end of the backyard. Wrapped in a shroud of bounty paper towels. I plant something nice for every passer. I only lost one this year but she got a banana magnolia in her honor.

I double/triple bag chicks or juvenile birds, and trash them. Older/beloved birds get buried. I lay 2 branches on top of the grave in a cross, as a memorial, and also to verify that nothing dug it up.

Oh... that is true... I would feed dead baby quail to the muscovy. Dead chicken chicks... usually toss them down the hill for wildlife...

Mice & rats count.
I usually bag mice/rats & throw them in the trash, but there was one time I trapped a monster sized rat. It was the middle of summer & I knew I couldn't let it simmer in the trash all week, so I bagged it, drove it to 711 & threw it in one of their trash cans. I'm sure that's probably frowned upon, so don't tell anybody I did it.

So far if I can't eat them, I take them out back as an offering of sorts. My husband composts them, lol.

When we had pets die in the winter we put the parrot in the freezer... the dog though (huge mastiff) we wrapped him in an old tarp and then stuck him in our biggest snow berm.

Our neighbor, their dog died in winter, they put her in a snow bank, then covered with a sled and more snow.

When the ground thawed the pets were buried. Such a race though... dont want the pet to thaw... need the ground to thaw.
