Another (unrelated) post I read today had me trying to list all the things I am currently growing in my veggie garden. I thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone grows and has success (and failures) with. I know many of you grow things specifically for your flock and most everyone has a compost pile.

For example, I am growing 3 varieties of green beans this year in an attempt to find one that 1) the rabbits won't eat and 2) tolerates the heat and 3)is prolific and 4) I can save seeds from to use next year. It sure would have saved me a lot of time and money if I'd have been able to draw from someone else's experience in the first place.

Here's the veggies I have planted this year:
sweet corn, peas, carrots-(no luck on this last year), cukes, okra- (found the one I'm staying with finally!), kidney beans, black eyed peas, various tomatoes-(hunting for the perfect slicer and cherry variety), various peppers - bells & hot, brussels sprouts, asparagus, cabbage, cantaloupe, watermelon, zuccinni squash, summer squash, acorn squash, green beans-(rabbits wouldn't touch the yard long variety, but they ate everything else!!), onions, shallots, strawberries, leeks, spinach

Herbs:
basils, oregano, marjoram, tons of mints, chives-garlic and onion, garlic, dill, rosemary, catnip, cilantro

Other:
aloe vera-(good for just about everything!!), nasturtiums, mammoth sunflowers (for seeds)

We also have fruit trees/vines:
peaches, fig, kiwi, orange, lemon, lime, 3 varieties of grapes

Hope to start/try:
bananas, apples, lettuces, avacado, broccoli, cauliflower

we also plan to start coastal on a few acres to bale for the horses and maybe to sell some.

I'm in zone 9- so if anyone has any tips on good varieties, please share!!

Wow, accidental farm! I've only been gardening for 3 years (this will be my fourth growing season), so still consider myself a newbie at it. I confess, one of my reasons for wanting chickens is FREE MANURE!! LOL

I'm in zone 5b.

This year I'm growing 3 types of peas, one of which is a new variety for me.
Radishes
2 types of carrots (both tried and true.
2 types of lettace (gotta get it started!)
Spinach (gotta get it started!)
Trying new squash this year, in addition to summer and hubbard
Zucchini YUM YUM
Pumpkins (1 I picked, one ds picked LOL)
Tomatos I will buy started plants this year. Our growing season isn't long enough, and I've had terrible luck starting from seed
Green Beans (bush variety) Had great luck with Provider
Cucumbers
Corn (new variety this year)

My dad also gave me some Collard greens seeds, and some eggplant seeds. LOL. I've never eaten either one!

Working on my herb garden. Last year grew Chamomile and LOVED it. What adorable little flowers! Also growing Dill, parsley, and a couple of others

I love my veggie patch, love to eat it! But my true love lies in my perennials. Mostly grow Black Eyed Susans (various Rudbeckia strains), Shasta Daisies, Johnny Jump-ups, cosmos. Have a ton of Daylilies here left by previous owner. Still in the process of getting all of THOSE gardens looking good, they are a work in progress! Every year they get better though! Planted my first seeds today WOOHOO! Poached egg plant.. LOL

I haven't really had any wild animals eating anything, and my veggie garden is closer to the woods than my house. We do have moles on our back lawn, but they don't seem to bother anything so far. Maybe it has to do with my dogs/cats? The deer did come in the late fall (well after I was done in the garden) and ate some left-over plants that I hadn't removed (mostly broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage), but since I was done anyway, I don't consider that a problem... LOL knock on wood.

I'm more concerned about keeping insect/pest populations down. Do chickens eat Japanese beetles? LOL Also would love to have some Blueberry bushes, but that's in the further future for us, I think.

Right now I have

7 cucumber plants (2 did not survive being trampled by our furry black wonder!)
4 tomato plants (I planted slicing and cherry, but did not label them, so I won't know which they are for a while

1 pumpkin plant (waiting for some more to sprout)
9 watermelon plants
8 garlic plants (2 got dug up by that same furry wonder, but we replanted them)
16 onions (which I think are getting ready to be harvested, but I'm not sure exactly when to do it)
waiting for the yellow squash to sprout

Fortunately I'm in zone 8 (probably 8b, I would imagine) so we can grow stuff almost year-round.

Oh yeah, I forgot the herb garden. It has rosemary (grown from a cutting from a nice plant from our old house), flat leaf parsley, spearmint, lemon balm, basil, oregano, and one little teeny echinacea that I'm nursing along. I have the worst luck with that, but I keep on trying.

We have various flowers. I just planted a pink climbing bare-root rose near the chicken run. Still waiting for action on that. Have some ornamental ginger, some phlox just sprouting, some wonder-egg eggplant.

I intend to keep adding stuff, as I clean out the chicken coop! Yeah chickens!!!

I've always lived in the burbs. When I was in elementary school there were yards big enough to have gardens and my parents grew a ton a veggies. They canned and froze everything so we enjoyed it all year around.
As an adult we've been moving around so much and living in apartments that when we found this house to rent we jumped at the chance. Our lot is actually a 1/2 acre which might not be very big, but compared to new construction it's like living on the open range.
I'm trying my hand at herbs, which I have grown in containers before. We also have a variety of peppers (for my husband) and tomato's, okra, hook neck squash, zucchini, potatoes, red onions, corn, pole beans, several varieties of lettuce, cucumber, carrots strawberries (for my daughter), watermelon and pumpkins (for my son).
We put up some chicken wire and put bird netting over the top to keep the rabbits and other freeloaders out. We didn't planted allot of anything, but I'm afraid we may have over done it.

I'd love to know if anyone can tell me what variety of tomatoes are acidic. I really miss sliced acidic tomatoes on my plate at dinner.

Hope I'm not in too deep,

We usually grow a salsa garden; peppers(all kinds) tomatoes, Onions, herbs, as well as corn, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, zucchinis, canalopes, watermelons and strawberries. Ahhhh I love summer!
BTW Hipmarye Love the pic

LOL- I wonder the same thing every year! Looking at those little seed packets, it doesn't seem like so much...little of this...little of that...
Gosh- It's much like a chick-addiction, isn't it? One or two EE's, a couple of RIR'S, ooh-lookit the cute Polish! I can have a couple of those...and on and on and on we go.
