What do you grow to feed the chickens??

Love it!! basil, marigolds and to deter flies!! I was reading an article about that just this morning. If you find citronella geraniums please post!!

I tried a wash of vanilla as a mosquito deterent-- perhaps I didnt use enough vaniilla so I will try again. Would love to know if the citronella can be made into a lotion . . . .maybe . . .

Usually Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart and alot of other hardware and nurseries carry citronella plants. I saw some at walmart last week. I think you have to go buy them rather than online. And you should be able to keep them alive by moving them into the house before fall starts.

Someone mentioned the wilkins vanilla lotion and I cannot find it even on line witht he link htey posted. THe mosquitos are out now that the warm wather has arrived !!

I put in 3 more tomato plants today-- figure the left overs will go to the chickens. Kids cut down sucker growth and dragged that brush off to the sheep ; and I weeded a bit as I prepped for the tomatos and tossed that to the buckeyes as they are only 50 feet away.

I did find a plant that I have seen before but didn't dare feed to anyone as I dont know if it safe to feed out. WIll have to get a pic and try to ID it.

I found a bug repellent recipe...mix half distilled water and half witch hazel. Add any essential oil about 30-50 drops. I haven't tried it yet, but I have tea tree oil and lavender oil. Hope this stuff works!

THe selection of varieties is AMAZING at this company. This particular plum looks likw a good naturalizing type. And can become shrublike. THey have a second chawctoah type that is similar. Iam very excited to see thiese. Of course will have to wait until next spring to order.

Those are like the wild plum trees. They will produce many suckers that will turn into more plum trees and spread like crazy. The fruit is really good.

Quince is an interesting fruit tree-- it likes moistish areas like along a creek. ANd if the info is correct, it fruits well into the fall and early winter. That sstretches out the season for fruit.

Sounds good if you have a creek or some water flow. We don't here.

OUr water table is high-- so I dont now if that counts. But given the great variety of other possibiities for fruit trees, quince is on the bottom of my list. I went crazy last night looking at the huge variety that WIllis had to offer.

I know there are so many possibilities for fruit trees. That is kind of why we just picked several that were our favorites and planted those. Dh gets aggravated with all the new stuff I keep wanting him to dig holes for.

But he does it. lol I still want an apricot and a pomegranate.

Our water table is high here but we still have to water. I tried planting some sugar cane near the pump house but it died. Not moist enough.
