I've worked through most of the laying breeds throughout the years, looking for my best overall flock....and then landed on the idea that I really want to focus on pretty egg colors for my egg basket.
With that said, I currently have a breeding flock of:
1 Barnevelder rooster (super sweet, seems to be passing along nice terra cotta genes)
1 Isbar-Marans hen, Olive Egger (breeding and brooding hen)
1 Cream Legbar hen, who doesn't seem to lay well, unthrifty, to be culled shortly
1 California Grey hen, very sweet, prolific layer, makes homebrewed BSL for me
First generation daughters:
BarnevelderxSplash Marans...2 grey daughters who lay terra cotta
BarnevelderxRhodebar....1 red daughter who lays tinted cream
BarnevelderxRSL....1 red daughter who lays a nice muted terra cotta
BarnevelderxCalGrey....1 daughter who lays a cream (my home brewed BSL)
Second generation in grow out, I've got
3/4 Barnevelderx1/4 Splash Marans (grey daughters bred back to Barney)...1 daughter
BarnevelderxIsbar-Marans (black daughters for F2 olive egger)...3 daughters
3/4 Barnevelderx1/4 RSL (red daughter bred back to Barney)....1 daughter, Barnevelder appearance
Then in the brooding hutch, I've got 1 excellent Bantam Cochin momma with 2 Cream Legbar chicks...1 boy and 1 girl who will become a breeding pair
...and a Silkie pullet who is trying to decide if she wants to go broody or not...if so I'll be setting some Ameraucana eggs with her
Just what's brewing at the moment.
