Some I can use a pencil on but some I can't because the eggs are dark. Can I use a silver sharpie?

Personally I use a black Sharpie. I don’t see anything wrong with a silver one.

I don’t know what markings you are trying to put on the eggs. If it is writing, yes a hard-leaded pencil can be rough. If it is just to be able to tell which eggs belong under a broody hen and you are worried about using a Sharpie just get a soft-leaded pencil and rub the graphite on the egg in a broad line using the side of the point, not the tip of the point. A Number 2 pencil might work but if you can find a pencil with number 1 lead, you can get a real good mark on the egg.

Yeah, I've had 100% hatch rates with normal chicks using a Sharpie. But that's why I mentioned using a soft-leaded pencil and rubbing it on the side and not using the point. That works too. Whatever makes you comfortable.
