What do you mark your eggs with?

I use a color pencil now and mark dates and air sack and pip time. I used a sharpie once and it did bleed through to the outer membrane but the chick was fine. Washable marker comes off the first time u turn them. Crayola doesn't write well on a fresh laid egg and a regular pencil is to light to see well

So what do you think the best thing to mark the eggs with would be?

"Lead" pencils contain graphite (which is inert carbon) and clay. Neither would be particularly harmful to the developing chick. Solvents and dyes in a sharpie might be a different story. People seem to use them without side effect though. I find pencils simple and effective. That's my choice.

Do you know what type of pencil you use? Or just whatever?

I was worried about the toxicity of a permanent marker on the egg since it's so porous, so I used pencil and made light marks. I may change this up for future hatches, but will decide when the time comes.

As long as the marker states that it is non-toxic...you should be fine... I was the opposite of the previous poster in that the thought of lead always bothers me. Though people have been marking eggs with pencils for 'eternity', so. Each to their own, I guess.
