What do you prefer?

Cornish Cross are the only option for me.

My family likes the white meat and nobody but the dogs will eat chicken legs. So it would be silly for me to raise birds with large legs and small breast meat.

I like the fast turn-around and the low cost per pound to put meat on the table.

If Cornish Cross have enough room, correct diet, lots of fresh water, and fresh air and exercise, they are not much different than any other chicken to raise. Their bones are growing fast, they need some sunshine for vitamin D so that they can properly utilize calcium to grow bone. I also give them a niacin supplement, the same one that I give to my ducklings.

I like the personalities of the Cornish Cross, they are big, good-natured, sociable, clumsy dinosaurs. Although it is worrisome to see them running towards you because you can never be sure whether or not they will be able to stop before they crash into you.

However, there are lots of other options. You just have to decide what type of meat you want and how long you want to raise chickens before you can butcher them. Also consider how much cost matters to you.
