What do you put in the nest boxes?

I have a paper shredder and shred my Sunday paper each week. Oh yeah, that's FREE except for the shredder which we had way before chickens.

I gave mine a choice...one box has sand in it...so far I have one hen that lays in this box. The other boxes have the last of the pine shavings. They don't seem to like these...they are constantly kicking them out and laying their eggs on the bare bottom of the box. A neighbor gave me her grass clippings this week and I added some of this to one box...still did not seem to approve since they kicked some of it out.

I use shavings, and have noticed that in the scratching they do clear a place down to the wood. Haven't had any broken eggs yet, but love the idea of carpet in the bottem! Will have to try that, especially since once all 7 girls are laying there will be alot more activity in the boxes. Thanks for the idea!

Wood shavings are better in my opinion, and also you dont have to worry about having to buy straw.
