Barred rocks all the way. I have buff orpington's and they are nice but, the barred rocks lay an egg a day and still find time to worship me.

They are there everytime I walk out the door and they sing me the most beautiful songs.

Kind of a mix of a whistle and hum. They do it everytime and if you pick them up which they LOVE they will really sing to you. The other day I pulled up opened the car door and read the mail, the next thing I know Oprah was in my lap.

If I had to do it over again I would only have Barred Rock hens and my standard cochin roo.

I would TOTALLY recommend a Buff Orpington. I have one, her name is Akelies ( Know its a strange name

). She is really nice, fairly smart, and I read that they are GREAT egg layers. Good luck!

Is there a huge difference b/w the barred and partridge rock besides the obvious coloring ones?

The first time I bought chickens I got the "brown egg layer special".
It was a combination of Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, White Rocks, Wyandottes, Australorp & Brahma. They threw in an Indian Game hen as well. I gave away/traded for 1/2 of them, and kept at least one of each. (more Reds because I got a Red roo) I have to say- it has been a great learning experience. It exposed me to all of those breeds and they've given me tons of eggs- and a few chicks.
I'd recommend doing the "mix" if you are interested in utility birds (not show birds) and you'll learn as you go what you like/don't like about the different breeds. Good luck-have fun!g
