Outside of medical, education, and government (local, state, federal), I cannot think of one safe field other than service. Can a country survive on service jobs? I hear constantly on TV that the unemployed are being "retrained." Retrained for what??? If the normal rate of unemployment in good times is 5%, where, pray tell, are the other 95% going to work?

My aunt retired from a shoe factory after 30 years. In the late 1970s she would be temporarily laid off at times because of the Italian shoe competition. She was compensated by our government then. Nobody seemed upset until "down-sizing" hit the elite jobs, tech jobs such as soft-ware engineers, etc. I'm not a protectionist but, come on, how about a little fair play for our jobs in the world market. Our politicians don't require other countries to provide benefits, pollution controls, or simply humane working conditions.

This whole job loss began decades ago and will only get worse. Factor in all the millions of uneducated immigrants coming in--the bottom rung is going to be very crowded. This may not be a subject that we want to discuss; it is very emotional.

Gas prises go up every summer soon as your kids are out of school the price of gas goes up..

I am driving him everywhere
he cant get work at McDonalds or the local coffee shop i would say the bottom rung is already very crowded

I am a product of a GM family, live in a GM town, and although I have never worked there, their economic downturn has caused ripple effects that has crippled the economy throughout Michigan. I've been out of work since Christmas from one of the safest jobs on the planet (Not naming names, but I worked for a food distribution center that caters to the majority of Michigan grocery stores)......... Food is safe right? Everybody needs to eat right?

Not in Michigan. That's why I put in a huge garden. Do I blame GM??? Not at all. I blame the FED....... yup, that's right. The housing market was allowed to be over inflated by the FED, and the collapse of that market made many people watch their life savings go flying bye bye...... then stocks crashed...... Many of my friends that are retirees watched their 401k and stock portfolios become worthless in a matter of months. Almost no amount of moving money around saved them (unless they cashed out all american funds and invested out of country)........... Some of them are now working at the grocery stores and wal-mart as greeters....

Do I blame GM? Nope...... I once again blame the FED.... they gave everyone in America the idea that EVERYONE was "entitled" to home ownership. How many people here in their 40's or younger had to save up for their down payment? How many of the younger generation took advantage of the cheap money and got into a house with no money down?

The government changed the rules on how many industries were regulated. They caused many booms and many busts. You want to blame an industry? Blame big government.

The government won't allow the auto industry to go belly up. EVER. We would have never won World War II if it wasn't for them. It would be giving anyone out there a strategic advantage over the USA to let the big 3 go belly up. I am surprised at the people here who seem a little anxious to see this happen.
