What do you think of him? Buff Silkie Cockerel

You should name him Oscar the Grouch!

I can't wait to mix your line with Mr. Ferguson's! Of the six I have, two are showing blue in the tail and one is showing black. Unfortunately, the one with black in the tail is the darkest, a really nice deep buff. Sigh.

Do you know what happens when you mix red in with the buffs? Would it help darken the color or just create something more in the partridge line?

Buff is diluted red, so breeding red will likely deepen the colour.

However, reds usually have significantly more black present in wings and tail than buffs, and you would be increasing the odds of adding that black. Getting partridge penciling will only occur if the red already carries the genes, and that should be apparent.

Pretty! Would love to see more pics when his streamers finish coming in! Makes me miss my buffs dearly, but they were way too hard to acquire to begin with for me to start that again.

I don't want to hijack Sundown's thread, but I find the genetics of getting a dark buff interesting. I know that we are all trying for dark, clear buffs, meaning no black in the tail. Blue leakage is acceptable, but black is not (and why is that exactly?). But it seems in the darkest buffs I've seen, they all have black in the tail. I know all of my darkest ones are that way. Explain to me please why you would breed a blue silkie into the mix to darken the buffs? Also why would you breed a partridge into the mix to darken the buffs? Maybe I should just start a new thread.....

Your cockerel is gorgeous, Sundown. I hope to have some of his offspring one day.
