What do you think of my deed restrictions?

What is a deed restriction??? What do the local ordinances say?

Is it possible this was written into the deed because of issues long since passed?

It all seems too wierd for me. I've never seen a deed that states restrictions. A
deed usually lists what you have rights to and if anyone else has a rightaway on
your property.

I would agree with a previous poster that these restrictions were put in to prevent industrialized farming. I can't think of any impact a few hens would have on an 8 acre lot. I would talk with the neighbors, always a good policy. Then I would look to get the deed amended. Instead of a blanket ban, maybe you could restrict it to 3 poultry birds per acre or some such.

Talk to your neighbors and tell them you have decided to "expand" your options with your 8 acres. Ask them nicely if they would prefer 5 swine (legal) or 5 chickens (illegal)! Bet that will settle any complaints!
