My son is getting into quail, build himself a DIY quail hatching incubator.
I am wondering what you guys feed the quail as starter feed and where to buy it? (online?)

Thnx Marty

Cant get it in TN area. What do you pay per pound for it?
manna pro has a gamebird/showbird and gamebird starter that can be found online, TSC, and RK ($6-7 per 5 pounds) if starting out with a small number and don’t want to store a huge quantity.
personally, I’ve been using country roads meatbird from RK as it’s the most accessible for me and works fine. ($14 for 50#) Purina Startena or gamebird chow is also very popular.
once adults, you may want to see if your feed store carries an all-flock crumble.

I used to keep 1 or 2 bags of it on hand just for new chicks. regardless of the brand you choose you will still want to grind up a couple pounds for feeding the first week. i use a food processor.

You can order Hudson feeds gamebird starter from Chewy, it’s about $34 for 50 lbs. you can also order gamebird starter from HHfeed (not homestead harvest) and they ship anywhere in the continental us, however they are pricey, at like $33 for 20 lbs, but the feed is excellent, I use it for my albinos. Homestead Harvest is available on amazon for maybe $30 for 40-50 lbs, but I found it terrible. It clogs my feeder, and if it gets wet it becomes cement boots stuck to their feet. I recently found a local feed store that carries southern states gamebird starter, which is $21.50 for 50 lbs, and I use that now, however the birds who were on the Hudson feed don’t like the change from their pellets to crumble, so I’ve been ordering a bag of Hudson for them from chewy, and giving everyone else the southern states. In our current 2 feet of snow, my husband dug out my feed buckets for me, and I had to keep being like, “no this is the wrong one” and he trudged back out to dig out the next bucket, mumbling about why they can’t all eat the same thing haha.

IMO southern states is amazing, it’s as good as hhfeed imo and less than half the price. My chicks grow quickly and feather so fast. If you can’t find it by you, I think Hudson feed from Chewy is a great option, but needs to ride the blender for chicks to eat because it’s pellets.

Purina Startena crumbles here for about first six weeks. Then I start mixing it with a lower protein starter, they don't like switching feeds instantly.

About 8 week mark start getting them on a layer crumble for the calcium, fiber, and other nutrients they need to support egg laying.

I looked into ordering feed online but the shipping was obscene. Do you have any feed stores in your area?

Also which variety of quail and how many are you trying to do?

Purina Game Bird and Turkey Starter. 50# for $22.49
Feed this for 8 weeks or until the hens start laying.

Local feed store stocks it but will order anything from their suppliers. I'll order the flock raiser for broilers.
