What do you use for "biting insect repellent" on horses?

I am all for homemade products and saving money, but I would look into the Lysol idea further before putting it on a horse. It is a germicide, you would never put it on your own skin. Personally, I hold my breath and apply it carefully when putting the aerosol version in a trashcan. It may have a smell that repels flys but I would be really concerned about the long term effects of putting it on the skin of anything.

Yep LOL I was a little skeptical when I was first told to try this but I did because the flies were torturing my horses and it worked. I only have to spray them down twice a day during bad fly days unlike other days when I have used the commercial and natural remedies having to spray down 4-6 times a day.

I've only used it on horses though....It is very safe for horses I have found. I have been using it for 8 years on one mare and never had an issue. I am a more 'natural' remedy/food/anything person but when it comes to flies on the horses....it is Lysol hands down. Even the vet said it is OK to use on them

It can't be any worse than the other chemicals we regularly put in/on our animals. I'm using Skin So Soft on the dogs and in the coop, but I have some liquid lysol concentrate, I'll try it around the kennels, house and dung heap. The flies have been bad for the last year or so. Maybe it will get rid of those Midges/muffleheads whatever they are.

A word of warning, whatever new you decide to try test in a small spot for a week or two to see your horses reaction.

I never used skin so soft, always bronco. My younger sister always used skin so soft, never anything else. My mom got the bright idea to just spray my horse with the skin so soft. Yea my old QH is severely allergic to it. He broke out in fist size hives and all of his skin pealed off like a snake. Then my mother insisted that it couldn't be the skin so soft because it was natural and sprayed him again. It took weeks for him to get over that.

Now as an adult with my own barn I wont even allow new stuff to be brought over, its just not worth the risk that someone will be stupid and use the wrong thing.

At my shoer's recommendation I am using Country Vet CVD-80 as a premise spray & on the horses.
If anyone knows how to get rid of flies, a shoer would be the one!

$12.95 (this year) at TSC for a 25oz aerosol - lasts me about 2 weeks on one horse, one pony plus the stalls, barn aisle, etc.
Sometimes I spray ME if the biting flies/mosquitos are especially hungry.

I don't use it every day, but when I do I concentrate on their topline, legs & tail (their flyswatter).
For faces & ears I spray it on a sponge and apply that way.
I also spray the outside of their flymasks if the pests are really bad in pastures.
Stomping & headshaking in stalls & pastures is greatly reduced.

I don't dump my wheelbarrow/muck bucket every day, but if I spray that as well it keeps flies off the "stuff".

Active ingredient is .50 pyrethin
For those worried about chemicals: pyrethin is an organic insecticide derived from chrysanthemums

Wow ...this was one of my old posts....
a little update now ...
All three horses love to be sprayed now ...
When we go out for a trail ride we spray our human bug spray on a cloth and we wipe down their ears and around there face and then give a couple squirts between their legs ...the rest of their body gets horse bug spray ...
