What do you use inside the coop to clean the "woodwork"

I don't personally see any particular need to clean unless there is something to BE cleaned. If there is, if it's a bunch of dust that has gotten worked into to all the little irregularities of the painted wood surface, a damp rag does it pretty well. If there is squirty poo graffitti-ed across the wall, warm soapy water and a big of scrubbing works. If the roost or fronts of nestboxes have gotten kind of grody, warm water (possibly soapy) and a bit of scrubbing generally works fine; for really dried-on stuff, you can lay a barely-damp rag on the area for a few hours and after that it is far easier to scrape or scrub off; for a SUPER nasty roost you can sandpaper it if you're desperate, although a good dustmask is a smart accessory.

JMHO, good luck, have fun,

Pat

Lots of help here...ideas always welcome, thank you so much. I think we'll go with shavings, just to try it out. Always had straw before, and it's easy to go back to, but I'm in the mood to try new things. We're gonna do sand in the run, something I had never heard of until I found this forum. Always just did tons of straw, kept adding and adding until we needed a big cleanout. Better hurry up and get that wire on the run because my kitties think they've just hit the CAT BOX JACKPOT!!! whoa, wait until we get the sand in there - - they'll be salivating outside the wire!

CityChook - thanks! We made huge inroads this weekend, and I'm beginning to see the end in sight.

PatandChickens, I kind of agree here. I'm not a clean-nik inside the house, so I prob won't be outside either, but I just know after all that work making it pretty and painting it, I'll want to spot clean and do a big cleaning every few months.

So no one knows the name of some stuff that I heard people saying they spray on the poop board and the poop comes off really easy? DARN - oh well. I can go searching again, maybe it's not that common, and again, maybe I don't need it.

Thanks all!!

Poop Off is what we use, and it's great stuff. It works faster than the wet rag method, and it's really good for removing dried on droppings.

It also comes in wipes, but that gets to be kinda expensive to use when you have a lot of birds and a lot of poo to clean up.

I keep a spray bottle of Poop Off and a roll of paper towels in the chest of drawers in the coop.

It also helps keep the walls cleaner if you have the roosts farther away, instead of putting them close to the wall. When I built my coop, I took the advice to place the closest one 18" away from the wall and that worked pretty well. I see that a lot of people with poop on the coop walls have their roosts closer to the wall than that.

The higher the roost is from the litter, the farther away from the roost the poop can travel on it's trajectory. It doesn't just drop straight down from the chicken, it can be moving at an angle.

A pressure washer does wonders to my converted stall in the barn. It takes all day, though. Wash, let dry. Put bleach in the sprayer, soak, let dry. Wash, let dry. Replace shavings. Re-assemble nesting boxes. Re-install roosts and 'toys'. It has yet to damage the finished pine walls!

I usually use vinegar and water. Its cheap and works better than any soap product I have. I dont clean except in the spring and fall and its mostly just washing the dust off of things and repainting the parts wearing away like the roosts.

Oooh, thanks. And yes, I think it was Poop Off. But all these ideas work for me. I esp. like the info about the 18" away for the roost, and maybe we'll just keep them low to the ground, eh? Haven't made the roosts yet.

Okay, well whose idea was it to paint the ramp up to the pop door red - MINE. And who added the artistic touch of WHITE cross pieces for TREAD --- MY DARLING HUSBAND.

I can wash off most of the poop once a week just to make the ramp not sooooo horrible looking,

But what's the deal with the black poop? That stuff must be 9/10ths TAR! I think I'll just touch up the paint once in a while.
