What do your dogs see chickens as?

Food.. everything is food to my dog. I picked her up off the side of the road in the sticks of farmland north Louisiana about 10yrs ago and she was not starving, but def not well fed, full of fleas/ticks, and dirty. She had to hunt for her food and prolly fought for it too. Anything that is not human (including other dogs) is considered a food source for her. Over the years I have tried to curb this natural survival instinct, but to no avail.
I have to segregate the dogs from the chickens and the tractor provides adequate protection, but if there is a chance for her to get after 'em, count on a chicken dinner.

One thing for certain "that dog'll hunt!"
Aww the poor dear. Thank you for saving her! Yeah instincts/trauma are pretty hard to train away I don’t blame her for that!

that’s a valid fear! They can be vicious 😂
Yes they can! My cats are all terrified of the chickens. Especially mama hens with chicks. They've been chased out of the yard so many times by angry mama's that they won't come in the back yard at all if my chickens are loose. :gig

I trained my GSD x Staffy to chase cats out of the yard. The training began with me taking her out to investigate any loud / alarm sound the chickens made. They now treat her like their guardian rooster. She also helps flush them out from under bushes etc and escorts them to the coop each evening. they aren't afraid of her in the least .. in fact, if i go outside without her they look around for her. She used to drop her ball in front of Betty chicken in the hopes of a playmate lol

Our dogs seem to think of them as siblings. When Rocky (our inside rooster) was still alive our smaller lab/pitt would play with Rocky, tail wagging and whining and Rocky would dance and flutter lol.

Our big 120# black collie/rott likes to protect, sniff and make sure everyone is okay. He loved having our new chicks in the house- black Australorps, so he thought they were like his babies. Goes out and just lays next to their run when outside lol wish I had pictures but none ony phone

That’s so sweet 🥹 I have a hen name Rocky! Rocky and Bullwinkle are my sibling hens 😂

My Mountain Cur/Mountain Fiest mix sees chickens as a tv show to watch while chewing the daylights out of his favorite toy.
Care to share a picture of your dog? I was seriously considering a mountain cur before we settled on weimaraner

Weiner dog nipped at Pepper when she was a tiny little chick inside the house. I was livid! But no harm was done, and they eventually all learned to ignore each other for the most part. Karma did come around when the chickens grew up, though. Weiner dog was outside following me around while the ladies were free ranging the yard. Heard a yipe, saw weiner dog dart past me, turned back and saw Pepper with a tuft of weiner dog’s hair in her mouth 🤣 now weiner dog is terrified of chickens.
