Grit is not normally needed for a chicken to be able to digest chicken feed.
I would be very concerned if I saw undigested feed in chicken droppings. Is the feed fresh? I might even try switching brands to see if it was perhaps a quality problem with the brand or particular bag.
I clean out droppings trays every morning so I have observed a lot of droppings in the last two years, and I can say with certainty that I've never seen anything only partially digested coming out of our flock.
