what does Egg bound mean?

Over a 4 month period, I had 3 Buff Orpington hens die from being egg-bound (I think...no autopsy). They were all laying HUGE eggs the size of large Duck Eggs. By the time I had noticed any problem, each one had "croaked". They were all the same age (same birthdate), 6 to 10 months old at death.

That's what little bit I know about it.

I wanted to thank you all for the advice on egg bound hens. My RI started to show signs of egg bound this afternoon. I put her in a warm bath and massaged her abdomen and the egg finally worked its way up to where I could feel it. I kept massaging it until it was close to coming out and put her down and out it popped! I thank you so much for your posts. This is one that has a happy ending!

my rhode island red hen who is one yr old now has been making funny sounds like a rooster almost. she has a poopy bum and no feather and looks red and swollen im so worried im goin to lose her. someone help me. the stuff stuck to her butt is green. question do they poop and lay egg out of same hole?

Our Americana had been clucking and walking funny, puffed up and seeming to try and lay for a couple days...two days ago we sat her in the tub for a 1/2 hour and 5 min. later she laid her first egg. Same thing happened yesterday, another bath in warm water (which she just sat in) and another egg. Today, no egg, did the tub, not as long though, and waited until evening...big mistake...still no egg, and I think she's miserable. The tub works, but don't want to have to do this all the time. Does anyone know if this will ever get better???

Someone told me that massaging the vent with mineral oil (outside and inside if you have small enough fingers

), and force-feeding them a little mineral oil (just a few drops at a time on the tongue) can help them get it out. Lubricant and diuretic, essentially.
I've never had to try it myself.

I have a hen that just won't lay. She laid 3-4 eggs in Feb, but since then nothing. She seems fine and healthy; do all egg-bound hens look sick?

madmandi, yes, they only have one vent for both egg-laying and pooping.

All three of our chickens stopped laying about two months ago after being very sporadic in laying eggs for several months. The hens look healthy, eating and pecking, clucking, even going to the coop as if they are laying, but not producing anything. They are only about two years old and are rhode island reds. Figure we will just give them some time.

My hen was egg bound on Tuesday I noticed her acting like she was straining and walking like a penguin. So i picked her up and she was prolapsed from vent, i sat her in warm water for 45 minutes I could feel the egg so I decided to help her. I stuck my finger in vent gently and felt the egg she finally laid it in water. I put preparation h on her and a diaper. Today is Thursday she is very slow moving she is eating and drinking. Hope she continues to be fine.
